Description

Title: Deputy Regional Field Director

Department: Field

Location:  This position is primarily based in California. While the location is flexible, candidates must be willing to work PST hours. This position requires the ability to travel.

Reports To: Field Director or Deputy Field Director

Supervises: Chapter Directors, Chapter Staff

Context:  At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of interdependence. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel injustice, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our future. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it. Sierra Club has close to 700 staff across the country and a network of 64 local Chapters that are led and fueled by thousands of volunteers. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with three labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope: The Deputy Regional Field Director serves as the main national point of contact and direct support for Chapter teams in the assigned geographic region to address climate disruption, transform the energy economy, protect communities from pollution, ensure access to the outdoors for all, and protect our lands, water, and wildlife. This role works in partnership with

Chapter executive committee chair(s) in the co-leadership model to further the priorities of the Chapter as established by the volunteer leaders, Sierra Club’s permanent organizing infrastructure. The Deputy Regional Field Director manages Chapter Directors and other Chapter staff as assigned. This Senior Management position holds and navigates confidential and sensitive matters with care and expertise. As a senior leader, the DRFD coaches, leads, and manages towards achieving the Sierra Club’s bold Strategic Framework and 2030 goals.

The Deputy Regional Field Director uses strategic vision to leverage the resources available to

strengthen Chapters and support them in tackling the urgent threats to our planet and

communities, and has a proven track-record of managing other leaders towards outcomes. This

role facilitates collaboration throughout the states they are managing and is comfortable

managing internal and external opportunities and challenges.
