Grounds and Facilities Maintenance Leader (Maintenance Crew Chief)

This position is based at Sully Historic Site and provides support to both Sully Historic Site and Colvin Run Mill Historic Site. Supervises and participates in the work of an assigned park maintenance crew. Inspects and completes maintenance of park facilities; checking facilities and site-amenities for damage and making necessary repairs. Determines and lists materials, tools and equipment needed to complete daily assignments. Uses gas power equipment. Inspects and operates tractors, loaders, groomers, utility vehicles, all with attachments and other equipment, and hauls equipment and materials. Uses walk-behind and hand-held power equipment. Informs supervisors of conditions requiring special attention. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order. Completes required documentation and daily work reports. Removes debris and litter from the site, buildings, and trails. Participates in snow removal and de-icing operations. Supervises, evaluates, and ensures that staff has been trained in and follows safety requirements for equipment operations and maintenance procedures. 

Work hours are generally 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. but may vary with overtime required when necessary. Position reports to Sully Historic Site at 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, Virginia 20151. Some weekend, evening, and holiday work required. Positions are subject to transfer to other maintenance operation locations. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position. • Leads, inspects, and reviews the work of a crew engaged in a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and/or construction activities;
• Inspects projects in progress and upon completion;
• Advises residents of county responsibility and refers them to the proper authority when appropriate;
• Estimates the amount of material to be used on a job;
• Prepares reports;
• Ensures that crew members have been trained in the proper use of equipment;
• Ensures that safety procedures are followed;
• Responds to emergency situations including snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies;
• Monitors and reports complaints;
• In absence of the supervisor, performs duties of dispatching crews, preparing work orders, entering on-line time and attendance reports, preparing accident reports, addressing citizen complaints, etc.;
• May assist in preparing safety tailgate topics for crews and presenting safety topics at meetings;
• Inspects and reviews the work of crews engaged in a variety of maintenance and construction activities;
• Oversees and is engaged in the work of assigned crews;
• Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
• Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
• Complies with safety competencies.

Ability to retrieve, modify, and print computer documents on a computer;
Ability to lead a crew in the performance of their duties;
Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude;
Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, and high levels of dust;
Ability to perform medium to heavy labor;
Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

• Driver's license (required)  
• CPR/First Aid (Required within 6 months)
• Pesticide technician License (Required within 12 months)
• Fertilizer certification License (Required within 12 months)
• Chainsaw Training (Required within 12 months)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to an integrated pest management program, operation, and maintenance of an automated irrigation system, and implementing an approved nutrient management plan. 
• Experience operating hand-held, walk-behind and riding grounds maintenance equipment such as string trimmers, sod cutters and utility tractors with implements.
• working with small equipment such as chainsaws, weed-trimmers, edgers, blowers, and/or walk-behind mowers.
• Experience working with equipment such as skid-steers with attachments, tractor with attachments, and/or riding mowers.
• Active member in local, state, or national Superintendent's Association. 
• Preferred experience with MS Office and FOCUS or other SAP. 
• Preferred experience working at historic properties. 
• Preferred First Aid/CPR training and completion of OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health training.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to bend, stoop, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and trailer. Ability to operate grounds equipment. Ability to traverse over uneven terrain. Work requires performing tasks in adverse weather conditions. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
