Position Overview

Looking to start a career in engineering design, electrical distribution, or the electric utility industry? TechServ is seeking an Entry-Level Engineering Technician / Designer to join our Electrical Distribution team.

No utility industry experience is required. Training is provided.

New team members begin with approximately 2–3 weeks of hands-on training, where you will learn industry standards, work toward applicable industry certifications, and receive training on client-specific CAD and design software.

Following training, you will work alongside Project Coordinators, Engineers, and experienced Designers to support the design of electric utility infrastructure. Projects may include electrical distribution, transmission, and substation design.

This position offers a clear path for advancement into higher-level Engineering Technician/Designer positions as you develop your technical knowledge and experience.

This is an in-office position with approximately 20% travel to regional project/job sites.

What You'll Do

As an Engineering Technician / Designer, you will:

  • Use client-specific CAD and drafting software to develop and update utility designs.
  • Support the design of new construction, system upgrades, alterations, and redevelopment projects.
  • Work with Engineers and Project Coordinators to incorporate design changes, redlines, and markups.
  • Prepare electrical distribution designs using client standards, drawings, specifications, and procedures.
  • Review drawings, reports, field information, and other project documentation.
  • Interpret and apply applicable design standards, codes, and specifications.
  • Review design drawings for accuracy, completeness, and quality.
  • Complete assigned project tasks within established schedules and budgeted hours.
  • Assist with project setup and maintain accurate information within project management systems.
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Project Managers, Project Coordinators, and other Designers.
  • Travel to regional project sites approximately 20% of the time.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is eager to learn, comfortable working with technology, and interested in developing a career within the electric utility industry.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 20%.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Associate's Degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, SolidWorks, or similar design software.
  • Knowledge of electrical design or electrical systems.
  • Previous exposure to electric utility or electrical distribution systems.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • This position works primarily in an in-office environment.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and standing may be required.
  • Must occasionally be able to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work extended hours when business or project needs require.
  • Approximately 20% regional travel is required.
