As a Software Engineer III at Walmart, you will design, build, and maintain full-stack applications that power retail and eCommerce experiences for millions of customers. Working within the Walmart Business Tech team in Chennai, you will contribute to both the front-end (Next.js / React.js) and back-end (Java / Spring Boot) layers of critical platforms, collaborating with product, design, and engineering teams across the globe to deliver high-quality, scalable software.

What you'll do...

About Team

This is the team which builds reusable technologies that aid in acquiring customers, onboarding and empowering merchants besides ensuring a seamless experience for both these stakeholders. They also optimize tariffs and assortment, adhering to the Walmart philosophy - Everyday Low Cost. In addition to ushering in affordability, they also create personalized experiences for customers the omnichannel way, across all channels - in-store, on the mobile app and websites. Our team is responsible for design, development, and operations of large-scale consumer facing applications. We focus on real-time transactions, user experience flows, streaming analytics across web and native apps. We interact with multiple teams across the company to provide scalable robust technical solutions.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop full-stack features across front-end (Next.js, React.js, TypeScript) and back-end (Java, Spring Boot, Spring WebFlux) layers, ensuring performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs and event-driven services using Kafka, integrating with downstream microservices, SQL/NoSQL databases, and third-party platforms.
  • Implement responsive, accessible UI components following design system standards, translating designs into production-ready interfaces with JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Write clean, well-tested code with unit, integration, and E2E test coverage; participate in peer code reviews to uphold engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and QE engineers in Agile/Scrum ceremonies to deliver features iteratively.
  • Build, test, and deploy services via CI/CD pipelines on GCP and Azure cloud infrastructure.
  • Work with SQL and NoSQL databases for data modeling, query optimization, and application integration.
  • Deploy and operate containerized workloads using Kubernetes on GCP / Azure.
  • Debug and resolve production issues; participate in on-call rotations and contribute to post-incident RCAs.
  • Proactively identify technical debt and drive improvements in system reliability and developer experience.
  • Contribute to platform modernization, API-first initiatives, and migration of legacy systems to cloud-native architectures.
  • Leverage AI-powered developer tooling — code generation, automated testing, and intelligent code review assistants — to accelerate delivery.
  • Collaborate with ML and data teams to integrate AI/ML-driven features (personalization, recommendations, intelligent search) into production applications.
  • Evaluate and adopt emerging AI/LLM capabilities to improve user experience and platform efficiency.

What You'll Bring

  • 3–6 years of hands-on software engineering experience in full-stack development.
  • Strong proficiency in Next.js and React.js — SSR, SSG, App Router, state management (Redux/Zustand/Context), and performance optimization.
  • Solid JavaScript and TypeScript skills — typing patterns, generics, async/await, and module systems.
  • Solid back-end engineering in Java with Spring Boot and Spring WebFlux — REST API design, reactive patterns, dependency injection, and microservices.
  • Experience building and consuming event-driven systems using Kafka or equivalent messaging platforms.
  • Working knowledge of SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (Redis, MongoDB, Cassandra) databases.
  • Hands-on experience deploying containerized services with Kubernetes on GCP or Azure.
  • Understanding of CI/CD concepts and tooling (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to code quality — TDD, SOLID principles, and clean architecture.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML integration patterns and hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools in day-to-day engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building eCommerce or retail platforms at scale — product catalog, cart, checkout, health/wellness, or optical verticals.
  • Exposure to micro-frontend architecture and module federation in large-scale Next.js applications.
  • Familiarity with observability tooling — distributed tracing, logging (Splunk/ELK), and metrics (Prometheus/Grafana).
  • Hands-on experience integrating AI/ML-powered features — recommendation engines, LLM APIs (OpenAI, Claude, Vertex AI), or GenAI-assisted UX.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or internal engineering libraries.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical design discussions.
  • Cloud certification (GCP Associate / Azure Developer).
