Role summary:
As a Data Scientist III, you will apply advanced analytical and modeling techniques to translate complex business challenges into data-driven solutions. This role requires expertise in data sourcing, exploratory analysis, and model development using programming languages such as Python. You will support the deployment and scalability of analytical models while collaborating cross-functionally to align insights with business objectives. The position demands a strong understanding of industry practices, data quality, and visualization to effectively communicate findings and drive informed decision-making within a dynamic environment.
About the team:
The Energy and Real Estate data science team at Walmart is focused on using the latest research in machine learning, statistics and optimization to solve business problems in energy management, facilities operations, real estate site selection and overall property portfolio strategy. We build models to empower decision-making, work with engineers to build reference architectures and machine learning pipelines in a big data ecosystem. Advanced analytical algorithms driven by our team help Walmart optimize energy consumption, real estate investments and business practices, reduce cost and pass those benefits to our customers. The data science and ML Engineering community at Walmart is active in most of the Hack events, utilizing the petabytes of data at our disposal, to build some of the coolest ideas. Our team is also at the forefront of building intelligent agents and working with the cutting-edge data science tech stack, including LLM-powered automation and agentic workflows, to push innovation even further. All the work we do at Walmart will eventually benefit our operations & our associates, helping Customers Save Money to Live Better.
What you'll do:
- Translate complex business problems into data-driven solutions using advanced analytical and mathematical methods.
- Identify and source relevant data sets, ensuring data quality and suitability for modeling purposes.
- Develop, test, and validate custom analytical models leveraging machine learning, deep learning, and statistical techniques.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align data insights with business objectives and support decision-making.
- Deploy scalable models into production environments, ensuring sustainability and performance monitoring.
- Create clear data visualizations to communicate findings and influence stakeholders effectively.
- Support continuous improvement by adopting emerging AI technologies and best practices in MLOps.
What you'll bring:
· Bachelor's in engineering with > 5 years of relevant experience OR Master's with > 3 years of relevant experience OR PhD in Computer Science/Statistics/Mathematics with > 1 year of relevant experience
· Experience in machine learning, supervised and unsupervised: NLP, Classification, Time-Series Forecasting, Data/Text Mining, Multi-modal models, Neural Networks, Deep Learning Algorithms
· Solve data science problems using world-class algorithms, by researching & experimenting, and implementing these to production using best practices to handle scale and latency requirements
· Develop production-level code and algorithms to generate better energy consumption and real estate demand forecasts
· Design Data Science experiments, execute them, and record the results
· Adopt Walmart's quality standards and develop and recommend process standards and best practices across the retail and real estate industry
· Research, learn & adapt new technologies — including LLMs and agentic frameworks — to solve problems & improve existing solutions
· Adhere to company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity
· Partner with senior team members to assess facilities, energy, and real estate portfolio needs and define business questions
