Vehicle Maintenance Technician

Performs skilled trades work repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive equipment, performing light body work, changing, and balancing tires, installing emergency system electronics, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor. Assist with other duties as needed or assigned.

• Operates specialized automotive diagnostic testing equipment in the diagnosis of mechanical problems, determines required repair or replacement of parts and initiates repair.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections, services, and repairs as necessary.
• Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services medium and heavy-duty equipment.
• Installs rings and bearings and effects proper adjustment.
• Performs repairs and replacement on diesel driven equipment.
• Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies.
• Overhauls, tunes, and adjusts engines using specialized and standard test equipment.
• Does diversified electrical and electronic work on automotive equipment, troubleshooting problems and repairing or replacing defective parts, repairing, and adjusting lights, generators, starters, air conditioning systems, etc.
• Uses computer to initiate, process and maintain work orders, records and reports.
• Performs minor body and paint work.
• Maintains shop area in a clean and orderly fashion.
• Other duties as assigned.

General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; mechanical aptitude; ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. 

 High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in repairing automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Possession of or ability to obtain air conditioning refrigerant recovery certification.  

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy.

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
