As a Senior Operations Engineer in the Java Platform Chapter, you will champion operational excellence across the Java ecosystem by managing platform lifecycle activities, OpenShift-based hosting environments, observability solutions, CI/CD platforms, and operational controls, while partnering with squads to continuously improve reliability, resilience, and customer service availability.
The team
You will join the Accounts & Cash Management domain within the Transaction Services Tribe as a Senior Operations Engineer in the Java Platform Team. In this role, you will work closely with the Platform Chapter Lead, Product Owner, and fellow platform engineers to deliver and support critical business capabilities.
You will take ownership of key initiatives and deliverables, including Application Lifecycle Management (LCM), risk and compliance remediation, major infrastructure migrations, and the continuous improvement of our Cash Management applications.
As part of a multidisciplinary and autonomous Agile squad, you will contribute to the development, enhancement, and maintenance of our Cash Management solutions. You will collaborate with colleagues across multiple locations and disciplines in a dynamic international environment.
Our Cash Management platform consists of a modern web-based front-end, Java-based APIs and services, and SAP modules (Banking Services, Payment Central, PI) as the core backend, providing critical functionality for our clients and business operations.
Roles and responsibilities
In this role, you will serve as a Senior Operations Engineer, accountable for platform stability, lifecycle management, infrastructure migrations, risk and compliance, observability, incident management, and operational excellence. You will drive the delivery of critical infrastructure initiatives, ensure platform reliability and resilience, lead modernization and automation efforts, and maintain compliance with ING engineering and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the operational health, availability, reliability, and performance of platform applications.
- Lead lifecycle management (LCM), infrastructure upgrades, and platform migration initiatives.
- Drive risk remediation, security controls, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance.
- Act as the escalation point for major incidents, coordinating service restoration and root cause analysis.
- Enhance observability through proactive monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and operational runbooks.
- Improve operational efficiency through automation, DevOps practices, and process standardization.
- Collaborate with engineering, architecture, security, and platform teams to deliver resilient and scalable solutions.

- 7+ years of experience as an Operations Engineer within complex Platform Engineering and DevOps environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, including Repositories, Pipelines, Boards, Artifacts, and Test Plans.
- Proven expertise in OpenShift and Kubernetes administration, deployment, and operational support.
- Proficient in Linux system administration, shell scripting, and automation.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining observability and monitoring solutions using Grafana, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry.
- Experience implementing and managing centralized logging and analytics solutions using the ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana).
- Solid understanding of cloud, infrastructure, and networking concepts, including virtual machine provisioning, containerization, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Key Vaults, service connections, and platform integrations.
- Strong ability to identify, prioritize, troubleshoot, and resolve incidents within agreed SLA commitments.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proven track record of restoring service functionality efficiently and minimizing business impact.
- Effective communicator who collaborates closely with stakeholders, engineering teams, and dependent applications to resolve complex operational issues.
- Skilled in creating and maintaining operational documentation, incident reports, and post-incident reviews.
- Experienced in conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implementing preventive measures to reduce recurring incidents.
- Drives and enforces operational best practices, standards, and engineering guidelines across the domain.
- Contributes actively to IT Operations processes, including Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management, Release Management, and On-Call/Standby support.
- Continuously identifies opportunities to improve operational processes, tooling, reliability, and service resilience.
- Prioritizes issues based on business impact, urgency, and risk while guiding teams toward timely and effective resolutions.
- Demonstrates the ability to simplify complex technical challenges and drive Operational Excellence through automation, standardization, and continuous improvement.
