.
About the Consumer Payments Product
Our client's consumer payments product is built to power everyday spending for a new generation of African users. With this product, they're exploring how to make payments simpler, faster and more reliable, whether you’re splitting a bill with friends, paying a merchant in-store, or shopping via the checkout. As part of our client's business, this product is grounded in the same mission: to power African ambition. They believe that the same level of trust, reliability, and innovation that our client brings to businesses can and should be part of how individuals experience money every day. Our client is in the early days of building this product and is looking for ambitious team members who are excited to shape the future of consumer payments across Africa. If you thrive in zero-to-one environments, love thinking deeply about products, and want to help define how millions of people experience money, they'd love to meet you.
Role Overview
You will be the Product Manager for the Consumer Payments Product, owning the product from understanding customers through to launch and iteration. This is a single-PM role on a small, senior team. You will set direction, make the calls and be accountable for the outcomes. You will work with Engineering, Design, Compliance and Legal, Customer Support, Marketing and external partners such as banks, card networks and identity providers. You will report to the TSG Labs Business Lead.
Job Type: Full Time/Permanent
Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Workplace: Hybrid
Requirements
- 5+ years of product management experience, including shipping a consumer product with real users.
Experience in payments, banking or fintech
- A track record of customer discovery: you have run interviews and research and used them to change a roadmap.
- Strong technical fluency: you can write SQL, read API documentation and write specs engineers build from.
- Based in Lagos, with a strong understanding of how people in Nigeria pay and use money apps.
While this isn't a requirement, it'll be a plus if you have:
Experience in a zero-to-one or early-stage team.
Experience working with regulators, banks or card networks.
A background in engineering, data or design.
What it takes to succeed in the role
You:
- are a clear and empathetic communicator, verbally and in writing. Your specs get built without a follow-up meeting.
- have a deep and unrelenting customer focus, and get close to users by habit.
- are motivated by the chance to improve how people in Nigeria experience money.
- turn incomplete, conflicting or ambiguous inputs into clear problems and manageable action plans.
- take an evidence-based, data-driven approach to decisions, and say no when the evidence isn't there.
- thrive working with different stakeholders and subject matter experts across engineering, design, analytics, compliance and marketing.
- are a creative product thinker who obsesses over continuous improvement, shipping a steady mix of small, medium and large releases, not just new products.
- have excellent organisation skills that keep your team focused and operating efficiently.
hold strategy and operations at the same time, from a pricing model in the morning to a compliance edge case in the afternoon.
- do whatever it takes to make your product and team successful, whether that means writing a QA plan or hunting down the root cause of a user's frustration.
Responsibilities
Understand customers first-hand
- Talk to our client’s users every week. Include new users, power users, people who churned and people who never finished signing up.
- Run structured discovery: interviews, usability tests, surveys and support-ticket reviews.
- Turn what you learn into clear problem statements the team can act on.
- Build a standing feedback loop with Customer Support so recurring complaints and failure points reach the roadmap fast.
Set direction and own the roadmap
- Own our client’s consumer product strategy and roadmap. Set defensible priorities based on customer evidence, data and business impact, and explain the trade-offs in a way that aligns stakeholders and energises design and engineering.
- Define the metrics that matter and run a regular review to guide product improvements: activation, transacting users, retention, payment success rate, fraud losses and revenue per user.
Build trust and reliability into the product
- Treat risk as a product surface: fraud controls, identity verification, transaction limits and account restrictions, designed with Compliance and Engineering.
- Own payment reliability across rails and partners. Use failure and latency data as product signals, not just engineering issues.
- Shape compliance workflows such as screening reviews, resolution tooling and audit trails so they are fast for the team and fair to customers.
Ship well
- Drive decisions across strategy, design, technology and launch, making several calls a day.
Document ideas and plans in clear PRDs and specs.
Pull your own data with SQL to inform decisions.
Remove blockers and go the extra mile to meet product objectives.
Work with partners and stakeholders
- Work with Marketing on campaigns, referrals and incentives grounded in what customers actually value.
- Be the face of the product with users and partners such as banks, card networks and identity providers.
- Keep internal and external stakeholders updated on priorities and progress.
