Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Underwriting Assistant to join our Personal Lines Binding Authority team in Richmond, VA.This role is ideal for an early-career professional, recent graduate, or individual looking to launch a long-term career in the insurance industry. The Underwriting Assistant will partner closely with Underwriters and brokers to support the policy binding process, ensure accurate policy documentation, and provide exceptional service throughout the policy lifecycle.
Working alongside an experienced underwriting team, this individual will play a critical role in processing new business, policy changes, endorsements, renewals, and other administrative functions while gaining valuable exposure to underwriting operations and Personal Lines insurance.
The ideal candidate is organized, professional, relationship-oriented, and eager to learn in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Location: This role will be hybrid with 3-4 days in our Richmond Office (9020 Stony Point Parkway Suite 450 Richmond, VA 23235)
What will your job entail?
Job Responsibilities:
Policy Binding & Processing
- Support the binding process by ensuring policies are accurately documented, issued, and maintained in accordance with underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Enter and maintain information within underwriting and policy administration systems to support rating, policy issuance, endorsements, and renewals.
- Assist with new business submissions and policy preparation under the guidance of Underwriters.
- Process endorsements, policy changes, cancellations, non-renewals, and renewal notifications accurately and efficiently.
- Review documentation for completeness and accuracy while maintaining compliance with internal procedures and carrier requirements.
Underwriting & Broker Support
- Serve as a key point of coordination between Underwriters and brokers by responding to inquiries and gathering information required for quoting and policy issuance.
- Assist with preparing and distributing quotes, revised proposals, and supporting documents.
- Support Underwriters in managing daily workflow and account servicing activities.
- Provide coverage and policy-related information to brokers and clients while maintaining a high standard of customer service.
- Assist with underwriting support functions and special projects as assigned.
Documentation & Operational Excellence
- Maintain accurate and organized records of policy transactions, endorsements, client communications, and underwriting documentation.
- Track cancellations, non-renewals, and renewal solicitations to ensure timely processing.
- Generate operational and production reports to support business objectives and process improvement initiatives.
- Assist with workflow priorities during team member absences to ensure continuity of service.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues across the underwriting and operations teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
- Strong interest in building a long-term career within the insurance industry.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong customer service and relationship-building abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to obtain a Property & Casualty Insurance License within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship, part-time, or full-time experience in insurance, financial services, banking, operations, customer service, sales support, or business administration.
- Exposure to insurance operations, underwriting support, policy administration, or account management.
- Experience working in a professional office environment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external business partners.
- Interest in underwriting, insurance operations, or risk management.

The target hourly rate range for this position is $23.00 - $28.85 per hour.The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands.
