About Northland Concrete & Masonry
Northland Concrete & Masonry (NCM) is a leading commercial concrete and masonry contractor specializing in complex commercial, industrial, institutional, and large-scale construction projects. Our work includes structural concrete, foundations, slabs, formwork, masonry, and specialty scopes.
As a Mason Foreman, you will lead and coordinate masonry crews in the field to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and according to NCM's quality standards. You will serve as a key connection between NCM's field operations, project management team, and workforce, providing daily direction to employees and coordinating masonry activities with other trades and project stakeholders.
Mason Foreman Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Crew Management
- Lead and supervise masonry crews on commercial construction projects.
- Provide clear daily direction to masons, laborers, apprentices, and other field personnel.
- Plan daily work activities and assign employees based on project priorities, skill levels, and manpower requirements.
- Monitor crew productivity and adjust assignments as needed to maintain project schedules.
- Coordinate with NCM Superintendents and Project Managers regarding manpower, production, schedule, and project needs.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and productive work environment.
- Mentor and develop less-experienced employees and apprentices.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and quality craftsmanship throughout the crew.
Masonry Construction
- Perform and oversee commercial masonry work, including CMU, brick, block, veneer, stone, and related masonry systems.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, details, elevations, and schedules.
- Layout masonry work accurately and verify dimensions, elevations, openings, control joints, and other project requirements.
- Coordinate installation of reinforcing, flashing, anchors, embeds, insulation, and other masonry-related components.
- Verify materials and quantities are available and properly staged before work begins.
- Monitor production rates and ensure work is progressing according to project requirements.
- Identify constructability issues, drawing discrepancies, or field conflicts and communicate them to the appropriate project team members.
- Ensure completed work meets project specifications, plans, and NCM quality standards.
Safety
- Lead by example and promote a strong safety culture on the jobsite.
- Conduct and participate in daily safety meetings and jobsite orientations as required.
- Ensure employees are following OSHA requirements, NCM safety policies, and project-specific safety procedures.
- Identify and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment, tools, equipment, scaffolding, and fall protection.
- Communicate safety concerns immediately to the Superintendent and project leadership.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
Scheduling & Coordination
- Coordinate daily masonry activities with NCM Superintendents and other trades.
- Review project schedules and plan upcoming work to maintain production and schedule commitments.
- Communicate manpower needs and upcoming material requirements to project leadership.
- Coordinate deliveries, material staging, equipment, scaffolding, and other resources needed for masonry operations.
- Monitor project sequencing and identify potential delays before they impact the schedule.
- Coordinate with general contractors and other subcontractors when required.
- Ensure crews are prepared for upcoming work and have the necessary drawings, materials, equipment, and information.
Quality Control
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and ensure masonry work is completed correctly the first time.
- Inspect work regularly for quality, alignment, elevation, plumb, level, joints, and overall appearance.
- Address quality issues promptly and communicate concerns to the Superintendent and Project Manager.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with project plans, specifications, and approved submittals.
- Assist with punch list activities and project closeout as needed.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain consistent communication with Superintendents, Project Managers, Project Engineers, and field leadership.
- Communicate daily progress, manpower, production, material needs, schedule concerns, and field issues.
- Report changes in scope, additional work, or unexpected field conditions to project leadership.
- Assist with documenting time-and-material work and potential change order opportunities.
- Participate in project meetings and coordination discussions as requested.
- Maintain accurate daily records and documentation as required by NCM and the project.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of commercial masonry experience, with previous Foreman or Lead experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of commercial masonry construction methods and practices.
- Experience with CMU, brick, block, veneer, stone, flashing, reinforcing, and related masonry systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, elevations, and details.
- Strong understanding of masonry layout, sequencing, production, and quality requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a field crew.
- Strong understanding of construction safety practices and OSHA requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with field employees, Superintendents, Project Managers, general contractors, and other trades.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with project leadership.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Experience working in a union construction environment preferred.
- Commitment to quality craftsmanship, productivity, teamwork, and safety.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
