Role Summary

Pathway Communications is a managed IT and cybersecurity services provider based in Markham, Ontario. We have been in business since 1995. Pathway operates a wholly-owned Tier III data centre in Markham and employs approximately 200 staff across Canada and overseas.

The Facilities / Datacenter Caretaker maintains Pathway Communications' office and datacenter environment in a safe, clean, and operationally ready state. The role covers day-to-day building upkeep, datacenter housekeeping, environmental monitoring, physical security checks, and vendor coordination. This is a hands-on position suited to someone who takes ownership of their space and can work independently across a mixed office and critical-infrastructure environment.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Maintenance
  • Perform daily walkthroughs of office and datacenter areas; identify and resolve maintenance issues (lighting, plumbing, HVAC, doors, locks, signage)
  • Coordinate with building management and external contractors for repairs, renovations, and preventive maintenance
  • Manage cleaning schedules and standards for common areas, washrooms, kitchens, server rooms, and loading dock
  • Receive, move, and stage deliveries including IT equipment, furniture, and supplies
  • Maintain inventory of janitorial, office, and building supplies; reorder as needed
  • Support office moves, desk setups, and workspace reconfigurations
Datacenter Operations
  • Monitor datacenter environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, water detection) and escalate anomalies
  • Perform structured cabling runs, cable management, and labelling under direction of the engineering team
  • Rack, unrack, and physically install or decommission servers, switches, UPS units, and PDUs
  • Maintain cleanliness standards in server rooms: raised-floor cleaning, air-filter replacement, dust control
  • Assist with fuel checks and generator run-tests; coordinate fuel deliveries
  • Log and escort vendor and contractor visits to secured datacenter areas
Physical Security & Safety
  • Conduct daily physical security checks: doors, access-control panels, cameras, fencing, parking areas
  • Report and follow up on security incidents, access anomalies, or safety hazards
  • Maintain fire extinguisher, first-aid, and emergency-lighting inspection logs
  • Support health-and-safety compliance, including participation in joint health and safety committee activities where required
Vendor & Contractor Coordination
  • Act as the on-site point of contact for facilities vendors (cleaning, HVAC, electrical, pest control, waste removal)
  • Track work orders and ensure completion to standard
  • Obtain quotes for small repairs and maintenance projects; escalate larger items to the Manager, Facilities & Datacenter

Qualifications

Required
  • 2+ years of experience in building maintenance, facilities support, or a similar hands-on role
  • Familiarity with datacenter or server-room environments (raised floors, cooling systems, rack infrastructure)
  • Basic understanding of structured cabling (Cat5e/Cat6, fibre, patch panels)
  • Comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs and performing physical tasks (ladder work, floor cleaning, equipment handling)
  • Reliable, self-directed, and comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and a habit of following through on open items
  • Valid Ontario driver's licence (G or G2)
Preferred
  • Trade certification or college diploma in building maintenance, electrical, HVAC, or a related field
  • Experience with access-control systems (card readers, intercoms, CCTV)
  • Familiarity with WHMIS and Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements
  • Experience working in a managed services provider, ISP, or co-location environment
  • Basic proficiency with ticketing systems for logging and tracking work orders

Working Conditions

  • This is a fully on-site position at our Markham datacenter and office facility
  • Shift work is required, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays on a rotating basis
  • Participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours facility and datacenter emergencies
  • The role involves regular physical activity: standing, walking, climbing ladders, lifting equipment, and working in warm server-room environments
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions (parking lot, loading dock, generator area)
