Basic Purpose

Under the supervision of the OHCM Deputy Director, the Student & Teacher Educator and Volunteer Coordinator leads student and teacher educational programming while managing the Oklahoma History Center’s volunteer program. The position develops and delivers engaging learning experiences for students, educators, and community audiences while recruiting, training, coordinating, and supporting volunteers who contribute to education, public engagement, and visitor experiences. Working collaboratively with museum staff, schools, community organizations, and volunteers, the position advances lifelong learning and supports the mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:

• Develop, coordinate, and facilitate educational programs for students, educators, and community groups, including field trips, tours, classroom programs, living history/interpretive presentations, and outreach activities.
• Create and maintain curricula, lesson plans, e-exhibits, traveling trunks with the support of the Trunk Coordinator, and other educational resources.
• Build and maintain partnerships with schools, colleges, universities, and community organizations to expand education opportunities.
• Coordinate teacher workshops and professional development, serving as museum liaison for the Gilder Lehrman Institute Teacher of the Year program.
• Evaluate programs and prepare related reports, statistics, and grant documentation.
• Support museum festivals, special events, and visitor engagement; contribute to education communications, including the quarterly Education e-newsletter.
• Lead volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention in support of OHS/OHC programs.
• Serve as primary point of contact for volunteer applications, inquiries, and assignments.
• Collaborate with OHC departments and divisions (learning and engagement, collections, exhibits, visitor services, research, state historic preservation office, special events) to identify needs and create meaningful volunteer opportunities.
• Match volunteer skills, interests, and availability to assignments, and coordinate their schedules.
• Maintain accurate volunteer records (applications, contact information, hours, assignments, participation).
• Track and evaluate volunteer engagement; use feedback and reporting to strengthen the program and support grant/institutional reporting.
• Serve as liaison between volunteers and staff, promoting consistent practices, appreciation, and retention.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, history, public history, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Experience developing or delivering educational programs; classroom experience preferred.
• Experience recruiting, coordinating, or managing volunteers preferred.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, volunteers, staff, community partners, and the public.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with museum, volunteer, or database management software preferred.
• Interest in Oklahoma history, museums, education, and public engagement; availability to work evenings and weekends as needed
