Job description:

Position Summary

An established heavy civil construction contractor in New Jersey is seeking an experienced estimator to prepare accurate, competitive bids for heavy highway, bridge, transportation, and civil infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate brings substantial public-sector estimating experience, practical knowledge of construction means and methods, and the ability to collaborate with estimating, operations, project management, and field teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed estimates from initial bid review through final submission, including labor, materials, equipment, trucking, subcontractors, and other project costs.
  • Review plans, specifications, contract documents, and addenda; perform quantity takeoffs and identify scope gaps, risks, and opportunities.
  • Develop realistic production rates and construction approaches based on project conditions, historical costs, and field experience.
  • Solicit and evaluate supplier and subcontractor pricing; confirm scope coverage and competitive bids.
  • Assess staging, traffic control, schedules, utility conflicts, access constraints, and constructability considerations.
  • Participate in site visits, pre-bid meetings, bid reviews, final pricing, and proposal submissions.
  • Review applicable prevailing wage, bonding, insurance, DBE/SBE, EEO, and public-agency bid requirements.
  • Coordinate with operations and project management on bid strategy and awarded-project turnover.
  • Maintain organized estimating files, bid results, historical pricing, and production data; assist with change-order pricing as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Five or more years of estimating experience in heavy civil, highway, bridge, transportation, or infrastructure construction preferred.
  • Experience estimating large public construction projects; NJDOT, NJ Turnpike Authority, PennDOT, PANYNJ, or similar agency experience highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of roadway and bridge construction/rehabilitation, concrete, excavation, drainage, utilities, and related work.
  • Ability to independently interpret plans and specifications, perform takeoffs, and develop comprehensive estimates.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam, Viewpoint/Vista, or similar software a plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and deadline-management skills.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience considered.

Ideal Candidate

An estimator who understands how projects are actually built, anticipates cost and constructability risks, challenges assumptions, and takes ownership of assigned bids.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive compensation commensurate with experience; comprehensive benefits, retirement savings plan, paid time off, company holidays, and professional growth opportunities.

Equal Employment Opportunity

The employer is an Equal Opportunity Employer and considers qualified applicants without regard to any status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.

Why Join IEW Construction Group?

  • Be a part of one of New Jersey's most respected civil contractors with a legacy of excellence.
  • Work on high-profile infrastructure projects that shape the state's future.
  • Competitive salary and bi-annual performance bonus.
  • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision).
  • 401(k) / Profit Sharing
  • Opportunities for growth, leadership, and professional development.
