What You'll Do

The Mechanical Engineering Intern for the Fluid Components International product lines will support the overall engineering team by creating accurate SolidWorks 3D models and assemblies from existing engineering drawings as well as for new parts and fixtures. This role is ideal for a student pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering who wants hands-on experience applying drafting standards, interpreting technical drawings, and supporting real-world product development.

The intern will work closely with engineers to ensure models are generated in accordance with company modeling standards, file structure protocols, and documentation requirements.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Generate precise 3D part and assembly models in SolidWorks from 2D engineering drawings.
  • Create new designs for mechanical parts, components, and fixtures using SolidWorks based on engineering requirements and intended application.
  • Support the prototyping process through 3D printing, machining, assembly, testing, and design iterations to evaluate fit, function, and manufacturability.
  • Apply company modeling standards, naming conventions, and file management practices.
  • Review drawings for clarity and completeness prior to modeling; identify and communicate discrepancies.
  • Organize and maintain CAD files within the company’s PDM or file management system.
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure models reflect design intent and manufacturability considerations.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks (academic or project experience acceptable).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and GD&T fundamentals.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical components and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with assemblies, configurations, and design tables in SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with PDM systems.
  • Exposure to company or industry drafting standards (ASME Y14.5 preferred).
  • Prior internship, co-op, or project-based CAD experience.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office located on the second floor; candidates should be able to access this workspace with occasional time spent on the shop floor and in the stockroom to inspect and measure parts and assemblies. No travel is required for this role.

Physical Requirements

To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee must be able to:

  • Remain in a stationary position and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently alternate between sitting, standing, and walking throughout office and laboratory environments.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and/or move materials, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Visually inspect equipment, instruments, test samples, data, and work areas.
  • Safely navigate manufacturing and office workspaces.
  • Use hands and fingers to operate computers, laboratory equipment, tools, and instrumentation.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and cross-functional partners.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Internship Perks

  • Relocation assistance as needed.
  • Work on meaningful, real-world projects.
  • Learn from experienced mentors and industry experts.
  • Develop teamwork and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Gain insight into business operations and how your department supports broader company goals.
