What you'll be doing

Reporting to the Executive Director, Trading Documentation, and supporting the Managing Counsel & General Manager, Derivatives and Trading Documentation, the successful candidate will be responsible for the negotiation and execution of Global Master Repurchase Agreements, Master Repurchase Agreements, Cleared / Sponsored Repo documentation, and other agreements in respect of derivative transactions, and other trading products, on behalf of the Bank and its affiliates. The Director will work closely with trading room personnel, relationship managers, risk management officers and other members of the Legal Department to ensure that executed trading documentation reflects the Bank’s documentation policies and procedures with respect to trading products, which are developed in accordance with standards set forth by the Bank and various regulatory and industry bodies.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Details on your work arrangement (proportion of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of your interview.

How you'll succeed

  • Negotiation leadership - Negotiate GMRA, MRA, and SIFMA Master Treasury Clearing Agreements  and other master agreements related to derivatives and securities financing transactions.  The incumbent should have a strong knowledge of, and be capable of reviewing all REPO documentation including the 2000 and 2011 GMRA versions and the 1996 MRA. The incumbent will preferably have familiarity and experience with the sponsored repurchase market including familiarity with the new industry standard 2026 SIFMA documentation to govern sponsored repurchase transactions.
  • Documentation oversight - Apply and communicate the bank’s documentation policies and procedures for trading products in alignment with internal standards and applicable regulatory and industry requirements. Help identify practical solutions to support regulatory change and promote consistency across documentation practices.
  • Risk management support - Help ensure the most appropriate documentation is in place to mitigate credit risk and manage capital implications.  Familiarity with industry-published enforceability opinions regarding netting and collateral is an asset.
  • Platform and data management - Use internal and third-party online platforms to negotiate client-facing contracts and to access, update, and maintain information in support of the bank’s trading, regulatory compliance, and collateral management requirements. Ensure information is accurate, current, and maintained in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
  • Relationship management - Build strong working relationships with trading desk personnel, relationship managers, senior risk management partners, corporate clients, peer institutions, and regulators. Provide clear guidance, negotiate effectively, and support stakeholders across a range of complex documentation matters.

Who you are

  • You have deep expertise in trading documentation. You bring 5+ years’ experience from a leading financial institution or law firm with strong knowledge of repo / cleared repo documentation, along with advanced drafting, communication, and analytical skills. You have a strong understanding of GMRA, MRA and related agreements, and other derivatives and securities financing documentation.
  • You’re a thoughtful problem-solver. You’re highly detail oriented and comfortable working through complex issues with sound judgment. You can explain technical concepts clearly to internal partners and clients.
  • You’re digitally confident. You’re comfortable learning and using internal and third-party online platforms that support trading, regulatory compliance, and collateral management activities. You use technology effectively to manage documentation workflows and maintain accurate records.
  • You have relevant legal and regulatory knowledge. You’re familiar with credit agreements, security documents, intercreditor agreements, and related documentation, and you can review these materials efficiently to assess the bank’s security position. You also understand regulatory requirements related to onboarding derivatives clients, including Know Your Client (KYC) and Dodd-Frank requirements.
  • You have the right credentials. You have a law degree. Experience working at a law firm or as in-house counsel at a financial institution is considered an asset.
  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work, and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.

This role has an expected salary range of $150,000 USD - $175,000 USD based on experience, qualifications, and location (salary differential for different locations will be discussed during the interview). The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which may also include a discretionary bonus component. CIBC offers a full range of benefits and programs, including Medical, Dental, Vision, Health Savings Account, Life Insurance, Disability, Paid Time Off, Holidays, and 401(k), plus other special perks for our team members.
