Job Description:
Electrical & Controls Engineer – Utilities
Help modernize the systems that keep our plant running.
Mitsubishi Chemical is seeking an Electrical & Controls Engineer – Utilities to strengthen the reliability, safety, and performance of the electrical and automation systems supporting our Utilities and Wastewater operations.
This position offers the opportunity to apply your electrical expertise, solve equipment challenges, and help guide equipment upgrades and infrastructure improvements. You’ll work closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to keep essential systems operating reliably while developing solutions that improve long-term performance.
A strong foundation in industrial electrical distribution is especially valuable. The controls portion of the role focuses primarily on troubleshooting existing systems, with programming changes and upgrades as needed.
In this role, you will:
- Maintain reliable electrical infrastructure. Develop and improve maintenance programs for low- and medium-voltage distribution systems, including switchgear and motor control centers supporting 13.2 kV, 2,400 V, and 480 V equipment. Coordinate third-party arc flash analyses as required.
- Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues. Work with engineers, technicians, mechanics, and operators to diagnose equipment problems, identify root causes, and implement lasting improvements.
- Support industrial automation. Maintain, troubleshoot, modify, and upgrade PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, and associated communication networks, including Rockwell PLC-5, ControlLogix, and FactoryTalk systems.
- Keep essential utility equipment operating. Provide electrical and controls support for boilers, compressed air and drying systems, thermal fluid systems, chillers, cooling towers, HVAC equipment, pumps, UPS systems, and emergency generators.
- Support wastewater equipment reliability. Troubleshoot instrumentation, small PLC systems, motors, pumps, and agitators in collaboration with the wastewater operations team.
- Improve instrumentation and preventive maintenance. Specify and troubleshoot process instruments, develop calibration and verification procedures, and strengthen maintenance plans for electrical and controls equipment.
- Lead equipment improvements. Identify, justify, and implement capital and departmental projects that address equipment obsolescence, improve reliability, and deliver cost-effective upgrades. Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and energy providers.
- Maintain energy and system resources. Support the Energy Management System, prepare monthly energy reports, and maintain Rockwell software licenses.
- Support maintenance readiness. Identify critical spare parts, create purchase requisitions for parts and services, and work with maintenance planners to maintain accurate equipment bills of materials.
- Promote safe, responsible operations. Carry out maintenance and improvement activities in accordance with site safety expectations and applicable environmental requirements.
You’ll bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent military technical training and experience relevant to the position.
- Six years of relevant engineering experience preferred, with a background in industrial utilities, facilities, plant engineering, or production maintenance.
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems.
- Practical PLC and controls troubleshooting skills, including the ability to navigate existing programs, diagnose faults, and make appropriate modifications.
- Familiarity with Rockwell PLC-5, ControlLogix, FactoryTalk Studio ME, HMIs, VFDs, and networks such as Modbus, Data Highway Plus, and Ethernet.
- Experience supporting industrial utility equipment and process instrumentation.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with employees from the shop floor to senior leadership.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience using a computerized maintenance management system; SAP experience is a plus.
Direct wastewater process experience is not required. This position provides electrical, instrumentation, and controls support alongside a dedicated wastewater operations team.
You’ll have the opportunity to influence equipment modernization, take ownership of essential electrical systems, and see the impact of your work on plant reliability and operating performance. The role combines hands-on technical problem-solving with project work and close collaboration across the site.
The position includes after-hours support for equipment issues. Availability to receive and respond to calls outside normal working hours is expected, including nights and weekends as needed.
The salary range for this position is $95,000-$120,000. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary will be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in the posting.
