Job Title: Mechanical ATEX Inspector
Location: Nationwide (UK)
Job Summary
We are seeking a qualified Mechanical ATEX Inspector to perform hazardous equipment inspections to clients schedule and to ensure compliance with classification and BS EN 60079 standards, testing, and verification of mechanical equipment and installations used in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX zones).
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct ATEX mechanical inspections of equipment and installations in hazardous areas (Zone 0, 1, 2, 20, 21, 22).
- Verify compliance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, ISO/IEC standards, and local regulations.
- Inspect equipment such as rotating machinery, pumps, compressors, gearboxes, and static mechanical assemblies.
- Perform conformity assessments on mechanical protective systems (e.g., flameproof enclosures, couplings, brakes).
- Identify non-conformities, defects, and hazards, and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain detailed inspection reports and ensure traceability of findings.
- Support maintenance teams in ensuring safe equipment operation and modifications.
- Participate in risk assessments and hazard identification (HAZID, HAZOP) related to mechanical equipment in ATEX environments.
- Provide technical support and guidance on ATEX mechanical compliance to project teams, operations, and contractors.
- Ensure inspection tools, equipment, and methods are calibrated and used according to company and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications & Skills
- Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship or equivalent training scheme
- HNC or equivalent.
- CompEx Ex11 Mechanical Certificate
- Strong knowledge of ATEX Directive, IEC 60079 series, and related mechanical standards.
- Proven experience in inspection, maintenance, or engineering of mechanical equipment in hazardous areas (oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical, or similar industries).
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P&IDs, and mechanical documentation.
- Excellent reporting, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.

Work Conditions
