TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond. Our program offers young minds a chance to gather, learn, make new friends, and have fun doing so during their time at TRIUMF. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students which include different activities such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening. Additionally, we hold weekly seminars about the different experiments at TRIUMF, and these talks specifically cater to students. Located on the UBC campus makes it easier for students to make friends, create memories, and explore Vancouver all while working at TRIUMF.

About TRIUMF
TRIUMF is Canada’s national particle accelerator laboratory and a leading research facility in physics, life sciences, and materials science. Operating large-scale scientific infrastructure requires advanced energy systems, making energy efficiency and sustainability a key priority.
Position Summary
The Industrial Energy Management (IEM) Co-op Student will support energy efficiency, monitoring, and optimization initiatives across TRIUMF’s facilities. This role offers hands-on experience with complex mechanical, electrical, and control systems, including HVAC, compressed air, chilled water, and high-energy research equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting energy consumption data
- Support development and maintenance of Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS)
- Identify energy savings opportunities through data analysis and site walkthroughs
- Assist with submetering strategy and data validation
- Participate in energy audits
- Monitor performance of key systems (chillers, boilers, HVAC, compressors)
- Support measurement & verification (M&V) activities
- Prepare reports, dashboards, and presentations
- Collaborate with engineering and operations teams
- Assist with utility incentive applications (BC Hydro)
Qualifications
Education
Currently enrolled in Mechanical, Electrical, Energy Systems, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
Technical Skills
- Basic understanding of HVAC and energy systems
- Experience with Excel (Python or MATLAB is an asset)
- Familiarity with EMIS, SCADA, or BAS systems is an asset
- Understanding of energy audits is an asset
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in teams
Learning Outcomes
Gain practical experience in industrial energy systems, develop skills in data analysis and EMIS, and participate in real-world energy efficiency projects. Gain exposure to large-scale research facility energy systems and the unique challenges of high-energy infrastructure. Build practical skills in identifying, quantifying, and communicating energy savings opportunities to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
