Description
The UVA Department of Art seeks a qualified student to fill a student wage position within the Studio art building as a Student Woodshop Safety Assistant. The woodshop safety assistant is required to have a basic understanding of hand and power tools, in addition to one year of woodshop experience. The successful candidate must be able to perform basic woodshop tasks, and attention to details, demonstrate an ability to work independently and show initiative and problem-solving skills. Duties may include oversight in the wood and metal shops and training students on how to use the shop equipment safely. In addition, the candidate must perform work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Computer experience using Word and Excel a plus. On the job training will be provided. Work-Study Student preferred, but not required.
Position duties include but not limited to:
- Keep the woodshop and metalshop clean
- Help with maintaining courtyard cleanliness
- Return used hand tools and materials to storage
- General help with shop equipment maintenance
- Help students with preparation of materials/processes
Qualifications:
- Experience with hand tools, power tools a must. Metal shop experience a plus.
- UVA Student- Work-Study Eligibility Preferred.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and can work effectively with colleagues and the general public.

Anticipated Compensation: $15.00 Hourly Undergraduate. $20.00 Hourly Graduate.
Anticipated Assignment Dates: August 26, 2025 to May 8, 2026.
Schedling: 5-20 Hours per week.
