Description
Learning Opportunities: This position provides practical experience in laboratory preparation, microbiological media preparation, aseptic technique, equipment operation, laboratory safety, quality control, organization, teamwork, and time management.
- Prepare various types of media, buffers, stains, and reagents according to established procedures.
- Sterilize media, glassware, equipment, and laboratory materials using an autoclave and other approved methods.
- Pour agar plates and prepare culture tubes and other materials for laboratory exercises.
- Clean, disinfect, and organize laboratory workspaces.
- Wash, dry, and properly store laboratory glassware and equipment.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and report low-stock items to the laboratory supervisor.
- Dispose of biological waste, chemical waste, and sharps according to safety procedures.
- Perform routine checks of prepared media, supplies, and laboratory equipment.
- Follow all laboratory safety requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.Required Qualifications:
- Current student enrolled at Nicolet College.
- Successful completion of introductory biology or laboratory science coursework.
- Ability to follow written procedures and detailed instructions accurately.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently after training.
- Ability to safely lift and carry laboratory supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of a microbiology course with a laboratory component.
- Familiarity with aseptic technique, autoclave operation, pipetting, and microbiological media preparation.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and proper waste disposal practices.Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in a biology/microbiology teaching laboratory.
- The position requires standing, walking, bending, and reaching for extended periods.
- Duties involve the routine use of laboratory equipment, including an autoclave, balances, microscopes, incubators, and pipettes.
- The employee will work with standard laboratory chemicals, biological specimens, and microorganisms while following established safety procedures.
Compensation:
The typical starting pay range for this position is $ 16.12-$18.42 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position does not include benefits.
