The Lab Helper assists in all non-clinical tasks of the laboratory. The individual performs basic clerical and maintenance duties, such as but not limited to preparing samples for testing- centrifuging and aliquoting; storing and retrieving samples, distributing samples to workbenches and other departments; discarding samples; storing blood in the cold room (if applicable). The individual is able to receive and follow direct instructions and supervision from staff and shift supervisors. The Lab Helper is expected to be able to recognize issues and problems and address them as appropriate.
Essential Functions:
• Retrieve samples and/or slides. Centrifuge and prepare aliquot tubes when necessary. Operate Laboratory Electronic System for specimen tracking
• Handle add-on requests appropriately. Operate LIS system if/when necessary
• Deliver and pick-up samples to the correct workstation and/or department
• Monitor supplies stocks. Receive, date and store supplies as per defined guidelines
• Report and handle basic facility issues with bioengineering and engineering as needed including electrical, plumbing, safety, and others as applicable
• Keep logs, prepare paper requisitions for shipment or storage, others as assigned by supervisor
• Conform to all infection controls procedures
• Answer phone calls, provide information, answer basic questions, or recognize who to transfer the issue to, if applicable
• Follow supervisor's requests and instructions as assigned
• Keep a clean and well-organized work area
• Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• High School Diploma/GED required
• Operation of laboratory centrifuges, computers, printers, pneumatic tubes, and office equipment required
• Good communication and organizational skills required
• Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment- centrifuges, instruments, etc.
• Possess knowledge of good laboratory practices, including QA/QC concepts and practices
This position is located at the Einstein campus in the Rapid response lab. The hours are 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, alternate weekends of 4:00 pm-12:00 am.
