Description
Under limited supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties in the care and maintenance of County buildings, grounds, and facilities. Work may involve routine custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping, washing walls and fixtures, etc., and performing physically strenuous activities such as mowing, pruning trees, moving furniture, minor equipment repair, heavy floor stripping, and operating waxing and buffing equipment. Duties fluctuate slightly within the job title according to assignment and specific needs of the area of assignment. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in completion of assigned tasks. Reports to the Custodial Supervisor or Facilities Maintenance Foreman.
Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
• Secures and locks building at appropriate times; unlocks buildings.
- Performs janitorial functions such as sweeping, mopping, washing walls, stripping floors, waxing, buffing equipment and fixtures, etc.
• Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, and light fixtures.
• Sets up and breaks down conference rooms for meetings, arranging furniture as requested.
• Empties trash receptacles.
• Cleans, dusts, and polishes tables and other furniture.
• Performs other related duties as required.
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT/CONTRACT SUPPORT
- Makes daily, onsite visits to County buildings that are outsourced by custodial contractors.
- Completes daily checklists relating to custodial performance.
- Creates a custodial performance report at the end of the week.
- Schedules annual floor services and window cleaning.
PARKS & RECREATION
- Mows, drags, and lines off athletic fields for recreational play; places bases at appropriate distances on the field; removes standing water from fields; repairs equipment; delivers score books; sets up and dismantles soccer goals and batting cages.
- Cuts grass and operates string trimmers; polices parks and athletic fields and picks up trash and debris; rakes leaves and trims trees; plants new grass, fertilizes and aerates.
- Cleans shelters, grills, and restrooms; replaces paper supplies, as necessary.
- Performs building maintenance duties such as repairing fences and buildings, cleaning and painting restrooms, shelters, and buildings, restocking paper supplies, and maintaining an inventory of chairs and tables.
- Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs to tractors and mowers; cleans and greases equipment.
- Provides input for part-time performance evaluations.
- Performs leader duties for part-time staff and when the crew leader is not available.
- Removes snow at all County facilities, as needed.
- Performs all duties in accordance with the County's personnel policies and procedures manual.
- Performs varied carpentry, painting, masonry, and other building maintenance tasks as required.
- Performs other related duties as required.
High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) to two (2) years of experience in labor-intensive maintenance work; or any combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Employees in this position are required to wear safety shoes for some departments.
- Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in maintenance work and repair of such.
- Knowledge of maintenance procedures and is able to follow instructions.
- Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including lawn mowers, hand tools, shovels, rakes, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using motorized equipment and hand tools. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, such as motorized equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).
