Overview
The Area Operations Manager, MABU Aggregates is responsible for the overall leadership, operational performance, safety, quality, environmental compliance, and financial results of multiple aggregate production facilities. This position provides strategic and hands-on management for quarry, crushing, processing, and distribution operations to ensure efficient production, cost control, regulatory compliance, and customer satisfaction. The role collaborates closely with sales and support teams to achieve company objectives while fostering a culture of safety, operational excellence, and employee engagement.
This position will be based our of Troutville, VA and require 25% travel.
Reports To: Director, Quarry & Aggregate Operations
Direct Reports: Site Managers and other assigned personnel
Responsibilities
Safety Leadership
- Champion a zero-incident safety culture across all locations.
- Ensure compliance with MSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.
- Conduct regular site audits, inspections, safety meetings, and risk assessments.
- Lead incident investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Promote employee accountability and engagement in safety initiatives.
Operational Management
- Oversee daily operations of multiple aggregate production sites, including drilling, blasting, crushing, screening, processing, stockpiling, and load-out activities.
- Ensure facilities consistently meet production targets, quality standards, and customer demand.
- Optimize production processes to improve efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
- Monitor equipment utilization and coordinate with maintenance teams to maximize uptime.
- Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives across all locations.
Financial Performance
- Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets.
- Monitor key performance indicators including production costs, tons produced, equipment availability, labor productivity, and profitability.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction and operational efficiencies.
- Prepare and present operational reports, forecasts, and performance analyses to senior leadership.
Personnel Leadership and Development
- Lead, coach, and develop site leadership teams and operational personnel.
- Establish performance expectations and conduct performance evaluations.
- Support workforce planning, succession planning, recruitment, and employee retention initiatives.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Maintenance and Asset Management
- Partner with maintenance leadership to develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Ensure optimal reliability and performance of mobile and fixed plant equipment.
- Participate in capital planning and equipment replacement strategies.
- Evaluate operational and maintenance trends to improve asset lifecycle management.
Quality and Customer Service
- Ensure aggregate products meet customer specifications and quality requirements.
- Partner with sales and dispatch teams to support customer demand and delivery expectations.
- Address product quality concerns and operational issues impacting customer satisfaction.
Environmental and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations and permitting requirements.
- Support reclamation activities and sustainable mining practices.
- Maintain accurate operational and regulatory documentation.
- Represent the company during regulatory inspections and audits.
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute operational strategies aligned with organizational objectives.
- Support mergers, acquisitions, start-ups, and integration activities when applicable.
- Evaluate and implement new technologies, equipment, and operational processes.
- Participate in long-range planning and growth initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Management, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 8-10 years of progressive aggregates, mining, quarry, or heavy industrial operations experience.
- Minimum 5 years of management experience overseeing multiple sites or large-scale operations.
- Strong knowledge of aggregate production processes, quarry operations, crushing and screening systems.
- Working knowledge of MSHA regulations and compliance requirements.
- Proven experience managing budgets, financial performance, and operational metrics.
- Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and team development experience.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively between locations.
