The Opportunity

We are seeking a commercially focused Legal Counsel to join our Legal team on a two-year fixed-term contract.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Legal, you will provide practical, risk-based legal advice across a broad range of commercial, operational and strategic matters. This is a unique opportunity for a lawyer looking to broaden their in-house experience within one of Australia's most respected institutions.

You will partner with stakeholders across Procurement & Commercial Services, Technology, Investment Data Management, People, Culture & Inclusion and Organisation Enablement, helping to deliver organisational outcomes while effectively managing legal and regulatory risk.

This role offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of work, including commercial contracting, technology and data arrangements, strategic projects, AI-enabled initiatives, governance activities and organisational transformation programs. There may also be opportunities to support discrete investment-related legal matters.

What You'll Do

In this role, you will:

• Provide practical, commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of organisational activities.
• Draft, review and negotiate a diverse range of commercial agreements, including technology, software, cloud, data, consultancy and professional services contracts.
• Assess and manage legal risk while balancing commercial and operational objectives.
• Support compliance with relevant legislative, regulatory and governance requirements.
• Partner with business stakeholders to understand objectives and develop pragmatic legal solutions.
• Provide legal support to strategic projects, business improvement initiatives and transformation activities.
• Contribute legal expertise to technology, procurement, data and AI-enabled initiatives.
• Engage and manage external legal advisers where required.
• Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and advise on potential organisational impacts.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of legal processes, governance frameworks, templates and legal operations tools.

About You

You are a commercially minded lawyer who combines strong technical capability with sound judgement and a collaborative approach.

You will bring:

• A law degree and admission to practice as a solicitor in Victoria or another Australian jurisdiction.
• Eligibility to hold an unrestricted Victorian practising certificate.
• Approximately 3-6 years' post-qualification experience.
• Experience gained within a leading law firm and/or an in-house legal team.
• Strong experience advising on commercial contracts and commercial transactions.
• Excellent drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
• A demonstrated ability to identify legal risks and provide practical, business-focused advice.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
• A collaborative approach and the confidence to engage with stakeholders across all levels of the organisation.
• Experience in government, procurement, technology or data-related legal matters will be highly regarded.
