Description
Arranges for funerals. Makes job assignments for employees of the department. Maintains cemetery property and other grounds at many locations throughout the city. Responsible for the repair of equipment assigned to the department. Responsible for budgeting and purchasing tools, parts, equipment, gas, oil, and uniforms used by the department. Performs other duties as required. This position reports directly to the Mayor.
Employee works with limited supervision. Employee is responsible for planning and carrying out the successive steps and consults with supervisor only in unusual circumstances. Work is reviewed from an overall standpoint. Reports directly to the Mayor.

- Makes arrangements for funerals.
- Fills in sunken graves and straightens sagged tombstones, etc.
- Coordinates and supervises the cutting and trimming of grass, pruning of trees and bushes, and raking and removal of leaves in the cemetery.
- Supervises the cleaning up of debris after storms.
- Services and repairs equipment and vehicles of the department: regular gasoline engines, 4-cycle single cylinder and 2-cycle single cylinder engines, diesel engines, hydraulic mechanisms/cylinders.
- Fabricates material and makes repairs that require various types of welding: MIG, stick, and gas.
- Prepares daily time sheets and other required reports.
- Evaluates personnel performance, prepares yearly evaluations, etc.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and disciplining employees of the department.
- Prepares budget and administers same throughout the year.
- Performs other duties as required: This department performs the duties of public works, and may require the employee to perform a variety of other assigned duties. Shifts may vary according to the needs of the city.
- Opens and closes grave sites
- Disinterment of bodies to be relocated.
- Coordinates the collection of all parking meter money.
- Aids the public in genealogy research.
- Aids the public with property deeds and boundaries within the City of Florence Cemetery.
- Oversees the application of pre-emergent herbicide.
- Plans for yearly projects and upgrades for the cemetery property.
- High School diploma or G.E.D., or equivalent experience in specialized training in small engine repair, automotive repair, and welding skills.
- A minimum of six (6) years of training or experience in the field.
- Two (2) years of prior supervisory experience is preferred; a minimum of eighteen (18) months of experience is required.
- Must have a valid Category 3 (Ornamental and Turf Pest Control) Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commercial Applicator permit; or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
- Must have excellent attendance and safety records.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Ability to meet the public and communicate by telephone.
- Knowledge of the Florence Cemetery layout and lot locations.
- Ability to coordinate, supervise, and perform odd jobs in a timely, satisfactory, and safe manner.
- Ability to supervise < 10 employees.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to proficiently operate a tractor, front-end loader, and backhoe.
- Adequate mechanical knowledge in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment used
- by the department: lawnmowers, trimmers, power saws, hand tools, backhoes, tractors, and trucks.
- Ability to craft and fabricate in the areas of MIG, stick, and gas welding.
- Ability to establish and implement safety rules and procedures.

Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
- Ability to perform duties in all weather conditions.
- Ability to walk, bend, and stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds (more on occasion).
- Subject to being called out after normal working hours (including weekends on short notice).
