Overview

Under the direction of the Director of the Simulation Laboratory, the Standardized Patients (SPs) will be trained to portray a patient/person in a medical and/or communication-based situation.

SPs may be physically examined by students and faculty as part of the students’ learning experience.

SPs receive extensive training in clinical communication skills, educational expectations, and instruction on how to provide constructive verbal feedback.

SPs are expected to engage with learners in carefully designed “role play” events as though they were a person seeking care in a specific way.

This position will require the candidate to interact directly with students, faculty, staff.

SPs may sometimes be required to provide individualized feedback from a patient’s perspective, ensuring continuity for realistic case portrayal and evaluating student skills related to checklist completion. Working as a Standardized/Simulated Patient (SP) provides a unique opportunity to be involved in shaping the education of nurses and nurse practitioners.

The YSNSP Program will engage candidates based on the various course needs in the semester. We aim to provide learners with the opportunity to practice with individuals who will present with patient situations. This position is a temporary position.

SPs may sign up for cases that accurately depict the patient presentation and have to show a genuine interest in participating.

SPs have the flexibility to say “no” either for scheduling conflicts or case content reasons with reasonable time accommodation.
