Description

Putting people first, every day

BDO is a firm built on a foundation of positive relationships with our people and our clients. Each day, our professionals provide exceptional service, helping clients with advice and insight they can trust. In turn, we offer an award-winning environment that fosters a people-first culture with a high priority on your personal and professional growth.

Your Opportunity

BDO Canada is seeking a Manager to join our Financial Reporting & Insights (FR&I) team. This group provides high-quality accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance, and advisory support to privately held and owner-managed businesses, across a variety of industries.

We are looking for a proactive, growth-minded leader who enjoys taking ownership, building strong client relationships, developing others, and helping a team succeed in the fast-paced and rewarding environment of public accounting. The successful candidate will play an important role in leading client engagements, managing the day-to-day delivery of our work, developing our people, and contributing to the continued growth of our practice.

We value diverse public accounting experience and are interested in candidates who want to continue to develop their technical, leadership, and advisory capabilities. We are committed to creating opportunities that align with the strengths, interests, and career aspirations of the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of a portfolio of client relationships, serving as a key advisor and proactively managing client needs, expectations, deadlines, and opportunities.
  • Lead and oversee financial reporting engagements, ensuring timely, accurate, and high-quality deliverables.
  • Review working paper files, financial statements, and corporate and personal tax returns, providing hands-on guidance and support where needed.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and leadership to team members, helping them develop their capabilities while ensuring work meets firm and professional standards.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and staff assignments from planning through completion to meet client deadlines and expectations efficiently.
  • Build strong, positive client relationships and proactively identify opportunities to improve service delivery, deepen relationships, and better support our clients.
  • Work collaboratively with Partners and senior leaders to support the growth and effective operation of the practice, taking on increasing leadership responsibility within the team.
  • Support the team’s continued adoption of digital tools and process enhancements to improve efficiency, quality, and the client and team experience.

How do we define success for your role?

  • You demonstrate BDO's core values through all aspects of your work: Integrity, Respect & Collaboration.
  • You take ownership and initiative, anticipating what needs to happen and moving work forward independently.
  • You build trusted client relationships and are comfortable taking the lead in day-to-day client interactions, supported by the Partners and senior leadership team.
  • You understand your clients’ businesses, industries, challenges, and opportunities and use that understanding to deliver practical, high-quality advice and service.
  • You effectively manage competing priorities and help keep workflow moving in a dynamic, deadline-driven public accounting environment.
  • You take responsibility for client delivery, workflow, and team execution, allowing you to take on increasing responsibility and have a meaningful impact on the success of the practice.
  • You invest in the development of others through coaching, feedback, and delegation and contribute to an inclusive and engaging work environment that develops, retains, and attracts talent.
  • You have a genuine desire to continue learning, growing, and taking on greater responsibility.
  • You actively participate in the adoption of digital tools, process improvements, and new ways of working.

Your Experience and Education

  • Progressive experience within public accounting, including experience working with privately held companies and owner-managed businesses. Previous experience at the Manager level is preferred.
  • Strong experience in the accounting and financial reporting needs of privately held companies and owner-managed businesses.
  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing corporate and personal tax returns is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage client relationships and take ownership of engagements from planning through completion.
  • Proven ability to lead people, manage workflow, delegate effectively, and balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.
  • A proactive, solutions-oriented approach and a demonstrated willingness to identify what needs to be done and take the lead in executing on those priorities.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with both clients and colleagues.
  • Proficiency with Caseware and Excel; experience with Sage, QuickBooks, and other financial reporting technologies is an asset.
  • A commitment to ongoing learning and professional development, with an interest in growing your leadership and advisory capabilities.
