Overview

The Clinical Training Instructor is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating clinical training programs, specifically the Virginia Personal Care Aide (PCA) curriculum and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) Medication Administration course. This role ensures that all students and newly hired staff meet the rigorous state compliance, competency, and safety standards necessary to provide high-quality care in home health, community-based, and residential settings.

Responsibilities

  • Lead virtual or in person classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory instruction following the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) approved PCA curriculum. 
  • Teach core competencies including personal hygiene, transfer techniques, vital signs, nutrition, and patient rights.
  • Conduct the approved curriculum for medication administration. Teach safe administration practices, the "7 Rights" of medication administration, documentation, side effects, and error reporting.
  • Demonstrate, supervise, and objectively evaluate students during clinical skills lab practices to ensure competency before graduation or employment.
  • Maintain meticulous records of student attendance, coursework grades, and skills check-offs in strict accordance with Virginia Board of Nursing, DMAS, and DBHDS regulations.
  • Issue state-compliant certificates of completion to successful candidates.
  • Participate in periodic audits of training records and program curricula to ensure total regulatory compliance.
  • Provide constructive feedback, remediation, and one-on-one coaching to students struggling with theoretical concepts or clinical skills.
  • Foster a supportive, professional, and engaging learning environment that models excellent bedside manner and ethical clinical practice.

 

 

Training Requirements

Ensure all training requirements and renewals are met on time to maintain compliance.  Including but not limited to: 

  • Must complete orientation program.
  • Annual continuing education, hours minimum required by the payers/State.

Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • DBHDS Certified Trainer Status: Must be currently certified/approved by DBHDS to teach the Medication Administration curriculum, or meet the state criteria to obtain certification immediately upon hire.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience within the last 5 years.
  • At least 1 year of experience in home health, long-term care, or working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) or mental health diagnoses in a DBHDS-licensed setting.
  • Prior experience as a clinical instructor, preceptor, or nurse educator is highly preferred.
  • Travel required primarily within the State of Virginia.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
