Description
Grow and care for Hawaii's trees, plants, and gardens while helping to maintain some of Oahu's most valued public green spaces.
The Department of Parks and Recreation, Urban Forestry Division, is hiring for the following positions:
- Nursery Aid - Kapiolani Nursery, Honolulu (3 vacancies)
- Nursery Worker I - Kapiolani Nursery, Honolulu (4 vacancies)
- Nursery Worker I - Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, Kaneohe (1 vacancy)
- Nursery Worker I - Foster Botanical Garden, Honolulu (1 vacancy
- Care for, water, fertilize, prune, weed, maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants.
- Assist with plant propagation by preparing planting media, potting and transplanting seedlings, and caring for newly established plants.
- Prepare planting areas, install and maintain landscape beautification projects, and maintain nursery and tree farm inventories.
- Operate and perform routine maintenance on landscaping equipment, hand tools, and light vehicles.
- Help maintain nursery grounds and surrounding landscaped areas in a safe and orderly condition.
- Propagate, cultivate, fertilize, prune, and maintain a variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants.
- Prepare planting media, perform grafting, transplanting, seedling propagation, and related nursery operations.
- Install and maintain landscape beautification projects and care for nursery, tree farm, botanical garden, and public landscape plantings.
- Monitor plant health and assist in controlling plant diseases, insects, and pests using approved methods.
- Operate landscaping equipment and light vehicles and assist with transporting plants, materials, and supplies.
- Monday-Friday; 6:30 am - 3:00 pm (schedule may vary)
- Frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Regular lifting, carrying, digging, bending, kneeling, climbing, and other physically demanding activities.
- Exposure to dirt, mud, dust, pollen, insects, and horticultural chemicals while wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Work in remote or undeveloped areas that may not have drinking water, electricity, or restroom facilities.
- Weekend, holiday, evening, or emergency work may be required depending on assignment.
- Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.
A Nursery Aid may progress up the career ladder and/or qualify for other higher-level positions with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Nursery Aid (BC-03):
Some experience and/or training in the care and cultivation of plants.

Competencies and Skills Needed
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of:
- General horticultural practices and techniques used in the care and cultivation of plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, and lawn.
- Common plant pests and insects.
- The growing characteristics and habits of various plant life.
- Use and care of grounds keeping and gardening tools and equipment.
- Read, understand, and apply written instructions and guidelines regarding work schedules and assignments, safety practices and departmental directives.
- Pot and re-pot plants and do basic propagation work.
- Learn the names of and identify common plants and trees.
- Use common garden tools and equipment.
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants, including the propagation of various plants.

- A variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation.
- Practices, tools, equipment and materials used in nursery work.
- Plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them.
- Various commercial fertilizers and their use.
- Do grafting, air-layering and seed germination.
- Identify various plants.
- Recognize common plant diseases, insects and pests.
- Use common tools and equipment used in nursery work.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
For all positions:
Prior to appointment:
- Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile)
- Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) (part of pre-employment medical exam)
- Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test (part of pre-employment medical exam)
- First Aid/CPR/AED certificates
- Forklift Certification (Class C: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks-Pneumatic Tires)
