The City is seeking a dependable, safety-minded Crossing Guard to help ensure the safety of students traveling to and from school.
The City is seeking a dependable, safety-minded Crossing Guard to help ensure the safety of students traveling to and from school.
Duties include assisting students at designated crosswalks, monitoring traffic conditions, and creating safe opportunities for children to cross the street.
Work hours are subject to change based on the operational needs and schedule of the school district.
Include but are not limited to the following:Work Schedule:
Monday–Friday: 7:30 a.m.–8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. (Wednesdays: 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m.)Work hours are subject to change based on the operational needs and schedule of the school district.
- Constantly scan intersections for traffic hazards whenever students are present.
- Assist students at school crosswalks before and after school and during such other times as assigned while school is in session, by creating safe gaps in the traffic stream at opportune times to safely cross and protect children.
- Stand in the roadway with a STOP paddle continuously raised to shoulder height while pedestrians are using the crosswalk.
- Stand for up to 1½ hours at a time in the morning and 1½ hours in the afternoon.
- Control small groups of school age children while using crosswalks.
- Ensure that children are aware of proper safety rules when crossing streets; instruct children in basic safety techniques when crossing streets.
- Provide maximum pedestrian safety and prevent crossing accidents.
- Understand the traffic laws, signs and speed limits posted within a designated jurisdiction to effectively guide vehicles and people
- Report the unsafe behavior of students to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street.
- Ensure children cross the street only when safe; stop vehicles by using mechanical signals and hand-held stop signs; control students while waiting for traffic to clear.
- Report suspicious vehicles or strangers loitering near schools.
- Report traffic problems or irresponsible drivers to Supervisor.
- Greet the general public courteously; answer questions and provide information related to crossing guard programs; assist public in crossing street or providing directions as needed.
- Remain visible to the public during working hours; remain calm in emergency situations.
- Daily, regular and punctual attendance.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Required Knowledge or Ability to Learn:
- Local traffic regulations.
- Safety factors and potentially hazardous traffic conditions.
- Vehicle stopping distance.
- Emergency assistance procedures and techniques of basic first aid and CPR.
- Methods and techniques of assisting children across busy streets.
- Skills/Abilities or Ability to Learn:
- Understand and follow oral instructions including School Crossing Guard Guidelines.
- Observe children approaching crosswalk.
- Observe and hear approaching traffic.
- Recognize and avoid hazardous traffic conditions.
- Recognize speeds and distances of approaching traffic.
- Respond quickly if child attempts to cross the street unsafely.
- Remain calm in the event of an emergency.
- Bi-lingual Spanish preferred.
- Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, lift and run.
- Must be able to work on uneven surfaces.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions including rain, fog, wind, humidity, heat and cold conditions.
- Some experience working with children is desirable.
- Learn to operate crossing guard equipment safely and effectively.
- Instruct children on basic safety procedures related to crossing streets.
- Remain alert and attentive during working hours.
- Remain calm and use good judgment in emergency situations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
