Description
Duties and responsibilities:
Enforce local, state and federal laws and serve as a liaison to other agencies and the public. Minimum requirements: By state statute, requires a High School diploma or equivalency certificate with no felony convictions. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be honorably discharged from the Military and any law enforcement agency. Requires Advanced or higher certification as a law enforcement officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Requires active TCOLE License.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This job is within the Non-TCSO POPS job family. It is a second level job within the uniformed Constable series. This job is distinguished from the Deputy Constable job by the additional experience and testing required to obtain this level.
• Delivers and executes civil process papers; maintains records and files of executions received.
• Seizes property under court orders and holds auction on levied property.
• Enforces local, state, federal, and compulsory school attendance laws as required.
• Responds to inquiries and serves as liaison to other agencies and the public.
• Transports prisoners to jail and may transport persons committed to mental institutions to state hospital.
• Serves warrants, makes arrests.
• Serves as a bailiff for Justice of the Peace court.
• Responds to major emergencies and disasters.
• Assists with decisions concerning a law enforcement unit, and trains, educates and assists new Deputy Constables.
May perform the following additional duties (varies with the precinct assigned):
• Provides building security services and person inspections.
• May perform traffic related functions.
• Checks title and serial numbers on vehicles, maintains patrol vehicles, and searches for missing persons.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Requires a High School diploma or equivalency certificate with no felony convictions.
Must be at least 21 years of age or at least 18 years of age with 60 or more hours of accredited college credits or 2 years of military service with an honorable discharge.
Bilingual (Spanish)
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
Requires basic certification as a law enforcement officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
Requires two (2) years of law enforcement experience.
Active Peace Officer License
Preferred Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
Intermediate or higher law enforcement officer certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
Civil Process Proficiency certification from TCOLE.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• Criminal and Civil Justice system.
• Law enforcement process and arrest practices.
• Rules of Civil Procedure.
• Class C warrants.
Skill in:
• Writing incident reports.
• Communicating effectively.
• Use of a firearm.
Ability to:
• Write incident reports.
• Execute warrants.
• Respond to unexpected situations in a reasonable and professional manner.
• Safely operate a police vehicle.
Work Hours: M-Th (10 hrs.) or Tu-F (10 hrs.); Works some nights, holidays, and weekends.
