Director of Product Management

Job Summary & Responsibilities

ONTO Innovation is seeking a Director of Product Management to lead the strategy, business performance, and lifecycle management of advanced semiconductor inspection solutions supporting Advanced Packaging and Front-End Wafer Processing applications.

This is a Director-level Individual Contributor role responsible for owning the commercial and technical success of a product line. The successful candidate will serve as the business leader for their product portfolio, defining strategy, managing product profitability, driving roadmap execution, and ensuring successful customer adoption. This individual will work across engineering, project management, sales, service, operations, finance, and executive leadership to deliver differentiated solutions that address critical semiconductor manufacturing challenges.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong business acumen and is equally comfortable discussing inspection algorithms, optical architectures, and semiconductor process challenges with engineers and customers as they are discussing revenue growth, market strategy, and investment priorities with executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Product Strategy & Business Leadership

• Own the overall business performance of assigned product lines, including revenue, gross margin, market share, and customer satisfaction.
• Develop and maintain multi-year product roadmaps aligned with customer technology needs, industry trends, and company growth objectives.
• Lead annual strategic planning activities, including market assessments, competitive analysis, technology investment recommendations, and long-range business planning.
• Define product positioning, value propositions, and differentiation strategies.
• Develop business cases for new products, feature enhancements, and technology investments.
• Monitor product performance and market dynamics to identify growth opportunities and strategic risks.

 

P&L Ownership & Financial Management

• Own product-line P&L performance and accountability.
• Develop, product growth plans, and gross margin improvement initiatives.
• Establish annual operating plans, Headcount and needs and investment priorities.
• Partner with Finance to develop budgets, track performance against plan, and implement corrective actions as needed.
• Evaluate ROI for development projects, customer-specific investments, and strategic initiatives.
• Drive pricing, cost reduction, and profitability initiatives throughout the product lifecycle.

 

Customer & Market Engagement

• Partner with product marketing, developing the roadmap, customer priorities and engagements.
• Serve as the primary product advocate with customers, sales teams, and executive leadership.
• Build relationships with leading semiconductor manufacturers, foundries, memory companies, and OSATs.
• Lead customer roadmap discussions, technology reviews, executive briefings, and strategic planning sessions.
• Gather customer requirements and translate them into actionable product requirements.
• Partner with Technical Account Managers and Sales teams during evaluations, specification reviews, and customer escalations.
• Identify emerging market opportunities and evolving customer needs.

 

Program & Portfolio Execution

• Drive execution of new product introductions, major customer programs, and strategic initiatives.
• Provide leadership and direction to project managers and cross-functional program teams.
• Ensure alignment between business priorities, product roadmaps, development sched
• ules, and resource allocation.
• Own Product Lifecycle (PLC) governance and stage-gate reviews.
• Establish priorities and resolve conflicts across engineering, operations, service, and commercial organizations.
• Hold cross-functional teams accountable for delivering commitments while balancing technical, schedule, and financial objectives.

 

Technical Product Leadership

• Develop a deep understanding of semiconductor manufacturing challenges and inspection technologies.
• Lead the creation of Product Requirements Documents (PRDs), product specifications, and roadmap requirements.
• Work closely with engineering teams to define system architectures, performance objectives, and technology tradeoffs.
• Participate in technical reviews and provide product direction throughout development programs.
• Analyze field data and customer feedback to drive Continuous Improvement Programs (CIP) and future product development.

Applicants must have the ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 30% in support of customer engagements, technology reviews, industry conferences, product launches, and strategic business activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline.
• Minimum 15 years of experience in semiconductor capital equipment, semiconductor manufacturing, inspection, metrology, or process control industries.
• Minimum 5 years of Product Management, Program Management, Business Unit Management, or related leadership experience.
• Experience owning product strategy, product roadmaps, and business performance.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large cross-functional initiatives without direct organizational authority.
• Strong technical aptitude with the ability to dive deeply into engineering, process, and system-level discussions.
• Experience developing product requirements, business cases, and investment strategies.
• Excellent analytical, communication, presentation, and executive engagement skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a technical discipline.
• Experience with semiconductor inspection, metrology, optics, machine vision, image processing, AI/ML, or process control technologies.
• Knowledge of Advanced Packaging processes including:
  • Hybrid Bonding
  • 2.5D and 3D Packaging
  • TSV Technologies
  • Wafer-Level Packaging
  • Panel-Level Packaging
• Knowledge of Front-End processes including:
  • Lithography
  • Etch
  • CMP
  • Deposition
  • Yield Management
  • Process Control
• Experience working directly with leading semiconductor manufacturers, foundries, memory manufacturers, and OSATs.
• Experience managing global customer engagements and strategic technology partnerships.

Compensation & Growth

• Base Salary Range:

$158,400.00 - $237,600.00, offered in good faith and based on experience, location, and qualifications.

• Additional Rewards: Annual bonus opportunities and potential long-term incentives tied to both company and individual success.
