Job Description:
Civils Senior Design Engineer
The Senior Design Engineer will play a key role in managing and coordinating the design process across projects at Heathrow Airport. Working as part of the Design Management team, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Project Manager and engage with Clients, Design Consultants, and other key stakeholders on all design and engineering matters.
The role is responsible for ensuring that design solutions are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with all applicable design, quality, health, safety and wellbeing, and sustainability requirements. The Senior Design Engineer will support the Design Manager in the administration of the design contract, including the management of design changes, risks, and opportunities, while also contributing to the selection and appointment of design consultants.
In addition, the successful candidate will proactively identify and explore opportunities to apply emerging tools, technologies, and innovative approaches that enhance project delivery and drive continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities
- Manage the tendering of design packages from client brief through to appointment, ensuring scope is clearly understood and commercially aligned for both upstream and downstream stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain the Design Responsibility Matrix, ensuring clear ownership and eliminating gaps or overlaps in design responsibilities.
- Manage and coordinate design team activities and resources to ensure design deliverables are completed safely, on programme and within budget.
- Lead, manage and develop direct reports, where applicable, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Monitor design progress, manage programme risks and recovery actions, and serve as the key interface between the design and project management teams.
- Define, manage and coordinate design interfaces across disciplines and stakeholders.
- Lead multidisciplinary design reviews and facilitate engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
- Identify, promote and deliver value engineering opportunities throughout the design development process.
- Collaborate with the procurement team to ensure compliance with commercial and financial parameters and support the development of scopes for subcontracted work packages.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant health, safety, environmental, quality, inclusion and accessibility requirements.
- Work closely with Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental teams to support consultant audits and drive continual improvement.
- Liaise with client representatives throughout the design development process, ensuring requirements are understood and incorporated into the design.
- Present design proposals to clients and key stakeholders, capturing feedback, translating requirements into effective design solutions, and coordinating their delivery with the Construction team.
- Ensuring design compliance with client, industry and regulatory standards, while liaising with Engineering Services in Spain, where applicable, to align with Ferrovial's design processes, standards and best practices.
- Support and evidence the implementation of Health by Design, Design for Safety and Design for Sustainability principles throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review and certify consultants' monthly applications for payment.
- Prepare and submit monthly design KPI reports, ensuring performance targets are achieved.
- Support the Design Manager in resource planning, performance management, employee development and succession planning within the design team.
- Promote Ferrovial's values in all interactions with colleagues, clients, supply chain partners and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to the achievement of Health, Safety and Wellbeing objectives in accordance with company policies and project requirements.
Skills and experience
- Strong experience in design coordination and design management, including the management of civil and MEP design activities on complex construction projects.
- Working knowledge of BIM and digital engineering principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to manage time effectively, prioritise competing demands, and deliver against challenging objectives.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently, taking ownership of priorities and additional responsibilities with minimal guidance.
- Proactive approach to identifying and implementing innovative technologies and best practice solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Sound knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and its application within construction environments.
- Experience working in a cost-conscious environment, balancing quality, programme and budget requirements.
- Strong people management and leadership skills.
