Summary of Job Duties:
This position will work under the supervision and direction of the HLA laboratory supervisor. MLS II in the HLA laboratory performs a variety of technical procedures including HLA typing by rSSO and next generation sequencing methods, Luminex based HLA Antibody identification, and donor/recipient flow cytometric cross-matching. They are expected to keep all instrumentation in good working order and identify and notify the supervisor or lead tech of instrument malfunctions. The MLS II also performs quality assurance metric studies, and training/competency assessments.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology
- Valid ASCP (or equivalent) certification
- 2 years of clinical laboratory experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science
- Previous HLA lab experience

Job Requirements:
- Perform complex HLA and histocompatibility testing on patient and donor specimens.
- Perform HLA typing using molecular and serologic methodologies as applicable.
- Conduct antibody screening, identification, and other transplant-related immunologic testing.
- Perform crossmatching and compatibility testing for organ and tissue transplantation.
- Process and evaluate specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
- Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain specialized laboratory equipment.
- Analyze and interpret complex test results and recognize clinically significant findings.
- Review, validate, and accurately report laboratory results within established turnaround times.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance activities and investigate unacceptable results.
- Assist with validation, verification, and implementation of new testing methodologies.
- Maintain accurate documentation, worksheets, test records, and quality-control records.
- Participate in proficiency testing and regulatory compliance activities.
- Follow CAP, CLIA, laboratory, and applicable transplant/histocompatibility standards.
- Communicate critical or complex findings appropriately to pathologists, transplant teams, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Assist with training, mentoring, and competency assessment of laboratory staff.
- Monitor inventory and ensure appropriate availability of reagents and supplies.
- Participate in process-improvement initiatives to improve accuracy, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all laboratory safety and infection-control procedures.
