OVERVIEW

The Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in September 2027. In addition to teaching introductory-level undergraduate courses and upper-level courses for math majors, we prefer faculty who can conduct research in areas of applied mathematics including, but not limited to, methods in machine learning, artificial intelligence, optimization, operations research, or numerical methods. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, teaching MATH 230 (Introduction to Applied Mathematics) and/or MATH 316 (Applied Math and Modeling), other courses in our curriculum, or new courses aligned with the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs. The standard teaching load is three courses (12 credits) per semester, usually with two distinct preparations per semester. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and show a strong potential for maintaining an active research program. Research work with undergraduate students is encouraged and supported. Other duties include advising students and engaging in service activities.

 

About the Department of Mathematics

 

The 19-member Department of Mathematics offers Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees in mathematics and mathematics education and is active in undergraduate research. The department also hosts interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science programs in Actuarial Science and in Statistics (in collaboration with the Department of Computer and Data Science).

 

The Center for Faculty Development at the University of St. Thomas maintains a competitive research grants program that offers support for faculty both pre- and post-tenure. The Center for Applied Mathematics is located within the department and supports faculty and student research in mathematics and its applications. Salary range is for this position is $75,000 - $80,000.

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have a Ph.D. (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in mathematics or in a closely related field, or alternatively, candidates who have not completed their dissertation (ABD) but are nearing completion of the Ph.D. will also be considered, with an initial appointment made at the rank of instructor.

Step 2.
