An exciting opportunity has arisen within the #CSLSeqirus Medical Affairs team for an experienced Medical Director to lead the Australian Pharmaceuticals Medical Affairs team and provide strategic medical leadership across the in-licensed pharmaceutical portfolio.
Based in Melbourne and reporting to the Head of Medical Affairs, APAC, this is a senior leadership role with accountability for the development and execution of the Australian pharmaceutical medical strategy, team leadership and capability, medical governance, portfolio priorities and budget. As a member of the Regional Medical Affairs Leadership Team, you will work in close partnership with Commercial and other cross-functional leaders to align strategy, shape decisions and deliver short- and long-term portfolio objectives. You will build and lead a committed, innovative and high-performing team, creating clarity on priorities and enabling colleagues to deliver through strong coaching, sound judgement and effective resource allocation. You will also serve as the senior medical voice for the portfolio, influencing internal and external stakeholders and ensuring credible scientific exchange, compliant decision-making and a strong focus on patient needs.
Your Responsibilities
As Medical Director, Pharmaceuticals, you will:
Lead, coach and develop the Australian Pharmaceuticals Medical Affairs team, setting clear direction, building capability and creating an environment of accountability, collaboration and high performance.
Own the Australian medical strategy and medical plans for the pharmaceutical portfolio, translating regional direction and external insights into clear priorities, resourcing decisions and measurable execution.
Provide strategic medical leadership across portfolio and launch planning, including knowledge generation, scientific engagement, evidence communication and identification of unmet clinical needs and future opportunities.
Partner with Commercial, Regulatory, Market Access, Safety, Clinical, Legal and other cross-functional leaders to shape integrated strategies, provide robust medical judgement and support high-quality decisions.
Lead medical governance for the portfolio, including oversight of compliant medical processes, review and approval of relevant materials, investigator-initiated research and appropriate scientific exchange.
Develop and manage the Pharmaceuticals Medical Affairs budget, prioritising resources and activities to maximise strategic and patient impact.
Build and sustain senior relationships with external experts, professional societies, health consumer organisations, research partners, government and public health stakeholders, and represent CSL Seqirus at scientific and medical forums.
Oversee the execution of advisory boards and external engagement plans to generate actionable insights, strengthen scientific partnerships and inform portfolio strategy, due diligence and lifecycle planning.
Serve as the authoritative medical expert and portfolio champion, guiding scientific communications and ensuring the timely, accurate and balanced dissemination of medical and scientific information.
Contribute as a member of the Regional Medical Affairs Leadership Team, driving consistency, continuous improvement and strong medical leadership across systems, processes and ways of working.
Your Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role you will bring:
An advanced scientific or medical degree, such as an MD, PhD, PharmD, DrPH or DrSc, with relevant experience.
At least 10 years of experience in Medical Affairs and/or the healthcare or pharmaceutical industry, including experience leading medical strategy for products or portfolios.
Demonstrated people leadership experience, including hiring, coaching, developing and motivating field- and office-based medical colleagues.
A strong track record of leading through others, setting priorities and enabling teams to deliver high-quality outcomes in a complex, matrixed environment.
Significant cross-functional leadership experience and the ability to influence senior stakeholders, navigate competing priorities and build alignment around strategic decisions.
The credibility and communication skills to engage external experts, professional bodies, health consumer organisations and government stakeholders at senior levels.
Strong knowledge of medical governance, relevant industry codes and procedures, pharmacovigilance, regulatory affairs, clinical research and drug development processes.
Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate complex scientific and business information, make sound recommendations and communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
Experience in the design, initiation, oversight and reporting of clinical or evidence-generation activities as part of an integrated medical plan.
A collaborative, values-led leadership style, sound judgement and a consistent focus on scientific integrity, compliance and patient outcomes.
