The Joel D. Valdez Main Library is located in the heart of downtown Tucson. A busy community hub that serves a wide cross-section of Tucson residents, downtown workers, vulnerable populations, families, and local middle and high school students. We are seeking a Librarian II to lead our children’s services team and engage in programming, as well as to provide in-charge and desk support for main library as a whole. The ideal candidate will have strong communication and program management skills, experience working with youth and supervising staff, and the ability to demonstrate creativity and flexibility. Spanish language skills are preferred.
This position requires the ability to report to, and travel between, assigned library locations during the workday within a reasonable timeframe.
Essential Functions:

Serves as assistant manager of a large library division;
May manage a small library division with limited staff and perform all related duties, including creating annual Facilities Emergency Action Plans and implementing safety measures for staff and the public as well as submitting reports and budget information;
Makes decisions regarding library operations, personnel, and emergency situations;
Utilizes conflict management skills to de-escalate unexpected problems or potentially volatile situations, complete associated documentation, and demonstrate effective decision making;
Creates proposals and administers operating budgets for assigned unit(s) or division;
Establishes or maintains relationships with partner agencies, including nonprofit organizations and County departments to develop services and resources in support of the library’s mission, vision, and values as well as the evolving needs of Pima County residents;
Participates in, facilitates, or leads system-wide committee meetings focused on youth services or adult services while supporting library administration in implementing strategic goals and core values from a system-wide perspective;
Oversees a service level within a library such as youth services or adult services by developing, presenting, and coordinating evidence-based programs and services inclusive of all members of the public including vulnerable individuals and non-English speakers;
Manages assigned unit(s) or divisions through direct supervision of professional and supervisory employees, volunteers, and/or interns by training, scheduling, evaluating performance, making recommendations regarding probationary periods, employee discipline, and human resource issues in coordination with library management and other County departments;
May have a specialized scope of work in a support services department, such as: Community Engagement Office, Technical Services, Communications and Systems Office or Collection Development.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS or MLS) from an accredited college or university AND three years of professional-level experience performing library work, INCLUDING one year of general supervisory workplace experience.
(Supervisory experience may run concurrently with library experience identified above or may be ancillary.)
OR:
One year of experience with Pima County Public Library as a Librarian I.
(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):
Master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited institution.
Minimum one (1) year as a Librarian I.
Bilingual (English/Spanish - reading, writing, speaking).
Minimum two (2) years experience coaching and mentoring staff, interns, or volunteers.
Minimum two (2) years experience leading and managing teams.
Minimum one (1) year project management experience.
Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates: Some positions may require specialized certification or licensure relative to assignment at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an Initial or promotional probation period. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application or appointment. Failure to obtain / maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.
Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Incumbent may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends. Some positions may require bilingual abilities in English and a second language, as determined by the department head.
