Description
Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Training and Safety Coordinator to join our Public Utilities Safety Team. Under limited supervision, the CDL Training and Safety Coordinator conducts CDL training and performs safety-related work that directly supports Brunswick County Public Utilities.
The main focus of this position is to ensure that Utility Department personnel are trained and certified as CDL operators and meet all safety objectives (as defined by county, state and federal safety guidelines) while performing their duties. Work involves planning, coordinating, and overseeing training events (with a focus on CDL training) to include classroom instruction and behind the wheel training (range and road), and ensuring compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements for certification and testing of employees. The CDL Training and Safety Coordinator will also be responsible for preparing a variety of reports and maintaining records as related to the safety program within Public Utilities. This position is also responsible for implementing OSHA mandated safety training and maintaining records of employee attendance at those trainings. Must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assignments.
This position reports directly to the Safety Officer and, in the absence of the Safety Officer, will act as the safety lead for Public Utilities and will serve as the primary point of contact all safety related issues for Utility employees. In addition, this position is considered an ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE POSITION under County policy and will be required to work to maintain essential operations during inclement weather, non-emergency closure, and/or closure due to a state of emergency/county disaster. Associate degree in occupational health and safety, safety management, or related field; AND OSHA General Industry Safety and Health certification; AND five (5) years of experience in a safety and/or construction oversight position; OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate pump station equipment and motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force and/or up to 50 pounds of force more frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.

- Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement (or ability to attain endorsement upon hire) is required.
- Two (2) years of CDL driving experience and/or two (2) years of experience as a behind-the-wheel CDL instructor is required.
- Experience in utility operations, repair, maintenance, and/or utility construction is highly desirable.
- Water or Wastewater Operator Certification a plus.
