Crew Leader/Horticulturist
JOB SUMMARY
Under General Supervision this position oversees horticultural work involving the planting, care, removal & Propagation of various plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees located in City Parks & Right-of-Ways.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Plants, transplants, cultivates, removes, trims, prunes, fertilizes, sprays, and irrigates park trees, shrubs, plants and flowers for proper growth and health.
- Diagnoses plant diseases; mixes & applies chemicals to combat infestations, eradicate weeds, and control insects.
- Assist in determining desirable plant material and arrangement for effective utilization and aesthetic appeal in park areas.
- Makes minor repairs on irrigation systems and tool use.
- Leads and oversees the work of an assigned crew; plans work assignments; trains crew members in all essential functions; and maintains a safe work environment for work crew.
- Ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Leads and performs a variety of landscaping duties; mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; sprays weed killer and fertilizer; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; spreads grass seed; services irrigation systems; grooms ball fields; etc.
- Operates a City vehicle; conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; loads and unloads materials, supplies and equipment as needed to complete assigned projects; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; and completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
- Consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations; responds to complaints and questions related to street maintenance issues and activities; provides information; researches problems; and initiates problem resolution.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
- Receives various forms, reports, work orders, or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Operates a variety of varied purpose equipment and tools in road, right-of-way, landscape, and utility maintenance; operates a motor-grader, scraper, excavator, compactor, front-end loader, track hoe, back hoe, tractor/trailer and lowboy, street sweeper, ice spreader, chipper truck, leaf truck, milling machine, paving machine, commercial-grade lawn mower, weed eater, chain saw, blower, shovel, rakes, pitchfork, Maddox, pry bar or other equipment.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of commercial-grade trucks and City vehicles.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
An Associate’s Degree with two (2) years of experience in landscape design and maintenance; or
A Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field. Prior experience in landscape design and maintenance is preferred.
Licenses or Certification:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Must be able to obtain SC Commercial Pesticide License within 12 months of hire.
Must be able to obtain SC Master Gardner certification, or Certified Professional Horticulturalist (CPH) certification, or similar certification within 12 months of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is to move objects. The employee is occasionally required to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally requires: grasping, handling, hearing voices, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken, visual acuity in observations/operating equipment, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily outdoors where performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents. Work is performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.
