Housing & Food Services has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Custodian 1 to join their team.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to Custodian Supervisor, the Maintenance Custodian is responsible for performing custodial and simple maintenance tasks to maintain cleanliness and care of facilities; and providing customer service for residential students and conferees.

 

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Maintenance & Building Support (50%)

• Perform routine and minor maintenance and repairs to furniture, locks, floors, walls, ceilings, plumbing fixtures, lighting, partitions, and other building components under the direction of a supervisor.
• Clean clogged drains and assist maintenance staff with repairs, projects, and other maintenance activities as assigned.
• Maintain areas immediately surrounding assigned facilities by removing snow, debris, and other materials from sidewalks, stairs, driveways, and entryways.
• Perform limited grounds maintenance and operate hand tools, small power equipment, or motorized equipment as assigned.
• Follow established safety procedures for chemicals, supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Identify and report maintenance or repair needs and building concerns.
• Check doors and windows, assist with securing facilities when not in use, and report unauthorized occupants or other safety and security concerns.

 

Custodial Cleaning & Facility Care (30%)

• Perform routine and detailed custodial cleaning of residence halls, apartments, offices, dining facilities, and other assigned HFS spaces.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, showers, kitchenettes, elevators, stairwells, common areas, windows, walls, fixtures, furniture, and other surfaces.
• Empty trash and recycling and replenish restroom supplies.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, clean, buff, and apply finish to floors.
• Vacuum and clean carpets, furniture, and other surfaces.
• Operate and maintain floor-care machines, vacuums, high-pressure washers, and other custodial equipment.

 

Residential Operations, Event Setup & Customer Service (20%)

• Move, arrange, set up, and take down furniture and equipment for residential operations, meetings, conferences, and events.
• Support student room preparation, including room inventories, linen and bedding distribution, and bed setup as needed.
• Provide responsive customer service to residential students, conference guests, and campus partners.
• Perform duties supporting student and conference check-in/check-out and other residential operations, particularly during high-volume transition periods.

 

This position performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.

Minimum Qualifications

• Physical ability to do required work; AND one year of experience in custodial or general maintenance work.

• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

Competitive candidates will possess experience that demonstrates:

• Willingness to work any shift

• Ability to understand and produce written and verbal instructions in English

• Ability to effectively interact and communicate in a variety of situations

• Work independently with minimal supervision. 

• Successful as a Custodian or housekeeper

• Experience with computerized maintenance management system

• An eye for detail

• Dedication to a high level of customer satisfaction

 

Working Conditions

 

• Maintenance Custodians may be assigned to work in a residence hall, apartment complex, office/work area or UW Dining facility.  This position may be assigned to support the HFS maintenance team during peak volume times.

• Mandatory overtime required twice a year over weekend days

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$45,144.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$53,148.00 annual
