Job Description
This role forms part of the Trading & Execution team within TFM, responsible for the execution of ALM hedging, liquidity and shareholder investment strategies across multiple asset classes. Rather than specialising in a single product area, the role is deliberately structured to build breadth: the incumbent will develop and maintain trading and execution capability across fixed income (bonds, repos and bond forwards), interest rate and cross-currency derivatives and equity-linked/structured and FX execution, so that they can flex across desks as the team's needs require. This reflects the desk's move toward cross-trained execution coverage, reducing key-person risk and broadening each team member's market exposure. The role requires a strong quantitative grounding, hands-on trading discipline, and the appetite to rotate across product lines over time rather than remain confined to one instrument set.
Key Result Areas
Execution of fixed income trades (nominal and inflation-linked bonds, repos, bond forwards) in line with ALM and liquidity mandates.
Support and execution of interest rate derivative strategies (vanilla and cross-currency swaps) as part of hedging and funding activity.
Development of capability in structured and protected equity mandates including execution and monitoring of equity-linked structures.
FX execution support, including spot and forward transactions tied to funding, hedging and liquidity requirements.
Evaluation and management of risk exposures across portfolios to ensure ongoing compliance mandates and risk limits.
Transaction management: accurate booking, confirmation and settlement of trades executed on behalf of the desk.
Contribution to performance and risk reporting, including daily P&L, risk dashboards and market and trading commentary.
Relationship management with market makers, liquidity providers and counterparties across covered asset classes.
Active participation in structured cross-training and desk rotation, building working competence across bonds, swaps and equities/FX to strengthen team bench depth and continuity of coverage.
Collaboration with the ALM function to develop and refine hedging strategies on behalf of the business.
Keeping abreast of industry, regulatory and market developments across all covered asset classes and escalating implications where relevant.
Qualifications & Experience Required
Technical degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics or a related quantitative field.
Open to a range of experience levels (approx. 3–10+ years) in financial markets, from either a trading or asset management background – seniority will be matched to the strongest available candidate.
Demonstrated experience in Fixed Income is essential; exposure to interest rate derivatives, equity derivatives/structured products and/or FX is advantageous, as is a genuine willingness to build capability across these areas.
SAIFM RPE and/or JSE Registered Securities Trader exams advantageous (a requirement at more senior levels).
Proficiency in Bloomberg and related trading and risk systems.
Competencies
Strong analytical and quantitative/modelling skills.
Exceptional attention to detail.
Versatility and a genuine willingness to work across multiple asset classes and products, rather than a single specialism.
Self-motivated, with strong initiative and problem-solving ability.
Resilient, with the ability to perform well under pressure in a fluid, fast-moving environment.
Strong professional communication and relationship management skills.
Team player with a collaborative, knowledge-sharing mindset – willing to teach as well as learn across product lines.
Able to work independently while remaining accountable to shared desk coverage objectives.
