Overview
The Summer Day Camp Group Leader (SDCGL) supports the Program Director by helping to create a caring and safe environment and developing and facilitating age-appropriate lessons/activities for school-aged children. They aid the Program Director in implementing a quality school-aged summer day camp program and are accountable for developing positive relationships with children.
Responsibilities
The duties of a Summer Day Camp Group Leader are not limited to the duties listed below. The Salvation Army reserves the right to change, reduce or expand the duties of this position at any time. - Implement and facilitate school-aged program lessons, activities, morning educational component, and encourage participation by children.
- Assist in the distribution of breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
- Assist with classroom behavior during specialty classes like nutrition, Science, dance, bible club, etc.
- Ensure program rooms and spaces are cleaned daily.
- Encourage self-help and good hygiene by modeling these behaviors.
- Document children’s interests as well as progress and communicate this information to the Program Director.
- Promptly report challenging child behavior and incidents that require follow-up to the Program Director.
- Ensure smooth transitions for children as they go through scheduled daily activities.
- Participate in daily activities with children to build rapport with and encourage their participation.
- Follow all program policies and state regulations.
- Attend and participate in all required licensing and professional development training and workshops.
- Other duties within the scope of the role or as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications
- Possess Infant/Child as well as Adult CPR and First Aid certifications or be willing to obtain such certifications within 90 days of employment.
- Must undergo and pass a criminal background check and additional screening required by licensing body.
- Must be willing to support faith-based activities and programming for youth.
- Must be energetic and enthusiastic when it comes to working with youth.
- Must provide health screening that includes satisfactory physical and TB results within the first 90 days of employment.
- Must understand and support The Salvation Army’s mission.
Desired Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Two years of youth development/classroom experience preferred.
- High energy and the ability to work well with others.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- A foundational understanding of positive child/youth development principles.
- Proven leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
