Ki te ora te wai, ka ora te whenua, ka ora te tangata
When the water is healthy, the land and the people are healthy
There's never been a better time to join Watercare. We're delivering a $15.2 billion, 10-year capital investment programme, the largest in our history, creating opportunities to work on transformative infrastructure, sustainability and digital projects that will shape Auckland's future. With more than $4 million invested every day, you'll be part of work that makes a lasting difference to our communities and environment.
He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
We have an opportunity for an experienced Data and Analytics Technical Lead to help shape the technical direction of Watercare’s end-to-end data and analytics capability.
Reporting to the Head of Data, Analytics & AI, you’ll set and embed technical standards across data ingestion, transformation, modelling, analytics products and business intelligence. You’ll help ensure our solutions are secure, governed, scalable, supportable and aligned with our wider enterprise architecture.
This is a senior technical leadership role, but it’s not purely about setting direction. You’ll remain close to delivery, providing hands-on expertise across complex, high-value initiatives and stepping in where your experience can have the greatest impact.
You’ll also:
- Own and maintain technical standards, reference patterns and guardrails across data and analytics.
- Lead the design and assurance of complex data and analytics solutions.
- Translate business requirements into scalable technical designs and practical implementation guidance.
- Review designs, code and release approaches, identifying risks, dependencies and technical debt.
- Act as the escalation point for complex platform, pipeline, modelling and reporting issues.
- Contribute directly to prototypes, implementations and the remediation of critical issues.
- Support the delivery of reliable data pipelines, analytical models, semantic layers, dashboards and reusable data products.
- Coach data engineers, analytics engineers, analysts and data scientists.
- Explain technical options, risks and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholder
Ngā pūkenga e rapu nei mātou | About you
You’ll be an experienced data and analytics professional who can combine strong technical judgement with a practical, collaborative approach. You’ll be comfortable setting standards and assuring complex designs, while still rolling up your sleeves when needed.
You’ll bring:
- Substantial experience designing and delivering enterprise data and analytics solutions in cloud environments.
- Advanced knowledge of data engineering, analytics engineering, dimensional modelling, data warehousing and modern data platform patterns.
- Experience with Snowflake, dbt, Power BI, Azure or comparable technologies.
- Experience with transformation frameworks, orchestration, CI/CD, source control, testing and operational support.
- Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership, design assurance, coaching and escalation across multidisciplinary teams.
- A tertiary qualification in analytics, computer science, engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- The ability to balance pace, value, risk and long-term sustainability.
- Strong communication and influencing skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
- A coaching mindset and a genuine interest in building capability in others.
Experience supporting data science or machine-learning workloads would be valuable, as would experience in utilities, infrastructure or another regulated environment. Relevant cloud, data engineering, architecture or analytics certifications would also be advantageous
