Description

The College of Performing Arts (CoPA) at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Props Artisan to join its Performance Operations – Props Department Staff. The Props Department is responsible for the creation, alteration, and sourcing of all props for productions in the Mannes School of Music, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and School of Drama. 


The Overhire Props Artisan is a qualified and organized collaborator who can follow instructions and work independently. Someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced, and highly team-oriented environment.The Overhire Props Artisan is delegated as needed to work on prop builds, alterations, storage pulls, and/ or shopping runs.


Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more.


This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the props department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.


CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as an artisan on show builds and alterations
  • Develop familiarity with to-do lists, prop lists, and project specific paperwork
  • Ability to act as the designated Production representative during tech rehearsals
  • Travel to vendors or storage locations to procure and cart supplies and materials as needed
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • One to three years previous experience in theatrical properties required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to work productively, graciously, and professionally under strict time and space constraints
  • Comfortable with power tools and heights
  • Strong carpentry, sewing, and upholstery skills
  • Experienced or able to learn and develop fluency in The New School’s suite of applications including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Workday, and Adobe Photoshop
  • Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, and the transformative power of the arts and education

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Driver’s license and comfort driving a cargo van
  • Experience in an educational or teaching environment

WORK MODE

This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.


HOURLY RATE: $27.00/hour
