Description

This position is full-time and with the regular work schedule of 10 hours per day, 4 days per week, on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of buildings, grounds, and parks.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the supervision of the Parks Maintenance Foreman and Parks and Recreation Director or designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May supervise community service workers or temporary employees as required and assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position serves an important role in the operation of the City and requires a consistent and dependable presence during assigned hours of work. It is expected that every employee should be on time, fully prepared, every day that the employee is scheduled to work.
As directed, orient, train and supervise the work activities of community service workers. Assure work is performed in accordance with sound safety practices set forth by the Parks Maintenance Foreman.
Works extensively assembling, maintaining, and operating below and above ground irrigation systems, including miles of distribution lines, pumps, back-flow prevention, check valves, gate and ball valves, hundreds of sprinkler heads, electronic controllers, circuit boards, extending existing and constructing new systems. Assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
Weekly inspections of soil compositions and irrigation systems in parks.
Ability to help with weed management program.
Performs all functions of parks maintenance at a high level of proficiency.
Proficiently operate all assigned equipment and vehicles to perform any operation within the capacity of the machine as necessary to accomplish required work.
Operates numerous types of equipment such as self-propelled commercial mowers, tractors, turf renovation equipment, jack hammer, trencher, etc.
Performs semi-skilled interior and exterior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work.
Assists in Urban Forestry techniques in removal, pruning, planting, care, and treatment of urban trees.
Manage and maintain the fleet of vehicles and attachments for vehicles and small motors.
Flexible to be available for emergency call-outs during off time.
Performs other duties as assigned.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Maintenance techniques in the care, construction, and operation of City parks systems, including athletic fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, parks, shelters, open spaces, and green belts.
Playground inspection, installation, and maintenance.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, AND
- Two years experience in repair and maintenance work including turf and irrigation maintenance OR
- Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must have sufficient experience in the field of parks maintenance to have acquired an extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in all phases, including a basic general knowledge of electricity, plumbing, carpentry, cement work, and irrigation systems.
- Working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance.
- Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment. - Ability to read and interpret technical materials pertaining to grounds maintenance, including catalogs, blueprints on buildings and irrigation systems, journals, and manuals.
- Remove snow accumulations after each snow event according to the schedule made by the Parks Foreman.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to work effectively as a team member; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to work safely; ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Herbicide Applicator License or the ability to become licensed.
Certified Playground Safety Inspector or the ability to become certified.
Valid Montana State Driver’s License.
Knowledge of Turf Irrigation and Urban Forestry.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Pickup truck; lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, aerator, chain saw, edger, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work; janitorial equipment.
