The Assistant Dean for University College provides strategic and operational leadership for bachelor’s degrees in the college and in support of the college's mission to strengthen first- and second-year retention, progression, and overall degree completion rates at Prairie View A&M University. Reporting to the Dean of University College, the Assistant Dean serves as a key staff member of the college's leadership team and plays a central role in enhancing program quality of degree programs and advancing initiatives to align academic support, supplemental instruction, advising, student engagement, and data-informed interventions around the needs of first- and second-year students.


The salary is determined in accordance with the University’s compensation structure and will be commensurate with the candidates’ education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position.


Responsibilities:


Management and Leadership


  • Provide support for the Dean in the overall management and leadership of the College by performing various assigned tasks and by representing University College on committees, task forces, and working groups as assigned by the Dean.
  • Assist the Dean in developing, implementing, and assessing institutional priorities of university, with particular emphasis on first- and second-year student success, teaching effectiveness, and core curriculum alignment.
  • Provide administrative and academic oversight of the bachelor's degree programs in Interdisciplinary Studies housed within University College.
  • Provide leadership for initiatives designed to improve student retention, academic progression, persistence, and degree completion.
  • Translate institutional student success priorities into coordinated programs, services, and practices that address the academic, personal, and transitional needs of undergraduate students.
  • Build and sustain effective partnerships across academic and administrative units and with stakeholders to advance student success and identify opportunities to strengthen the alignment of structured academic support, student success initiatives, advising, mentoring, and engagement.

Degree Program Management and Assessment


  • Manage program recruitment and enrollment needs, curriculum review, and semester course offerings.
  • Review student learning outcomes for degree programs within the college.
  • Ensure compliance with state and institutional requirements.
  • Supervise the hiring, onboarding and review of program faculty.
  • Coordinate advising engagement with PV Cares Team academic advisors.

Strategic Initiatives


  • Provide leadership for initiatives designed to improve student retention, academic progression, persistence, and degree completion.
  • Work with academic success grants to ensure collaboration amongst key stakeholders and compliance.
  • Manage the administration of funds and procedures relating to the College's financial operations, including reporting and policy implementation.

Other Duties


  • Serve as a thought partner to the Dean on emerging student success trends, challenges, opportunities, and institutional priorities.
  • Ensure that administrative matters are carried out in an effective and efficient manner to provide excellent service to Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) constituencies.
  • Collaborate with appropriate university stakeholders to provide faculty development.
  • Coordinate and actively participate in student recruitment and retention programs to ensure successful enrollment goals.
  • Collect various data and assembles information concerning the College which can be used to project the image of the College to the public and to various funding groups.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a public information and support system for and among alumni of the College.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:


  • Master’s degree in applicable field.
  • Six years of related senior administrative experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in student success, academic advising, student development, retention, persistence, enrollment management, or a related area.
  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to inform decision-making, assess programs, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Supervision of Others:


  • This position generally supervises employees.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Terminal degree in higher education, educational leadership, student affairs, or related discipline.
  • Seven years of progressive leadership in higher education.
  • Experience working with first-generation, historically underserved, or other populations of students who may benefit from coordinated student success support.
    Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based and high-impact practices that promote undergraduate persistence and completion.
  • Experience supervising professional staff and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Experience teaching first-year undergraduate students and a demonstrated understanding of classroom practices that support successful transition, persistence, and academic progression.
