We are dedicated to improving our communities, preserving the environment and utilizing the most innovative science practices in all our work.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a tunnel or rock mechanics engineer to support current tunnel and rock engineering projects and strengthen our industry presence in this field. This position offers the opportunity to work on challenging and technically complex underground infrastructure projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. The successful candidate will initially provide full-time field support or serve in a rotation with others for 12 to 24 months on a major tunnel construction project southeast of the Seattle metropolitan area, providing field-based construction oversight and technical support during a multi-year construction program. The role requires close collaboration with contractors, clients, geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, and other technical specialists to deliver innovative engineering solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide construction-phase geotechnical and geological oversight of tunnel excavation and underground infrastructure projects, ground support, and stabilization activities.
  • Monitor excavation progress and evaluate geological, rock mass, and groundwater conditions to support safe, efficient construction.
  • Assess excavation performance and ground behavior and recommend initial or supplemental ground support.
  • Review probe hole and field data to evaluate anticipated conditions ahead of excavation.
  • Perform and supervise geologic and tunnel support mapping, and field data collection in accordance with project and industry standards.
  • Collect, process, and review monitoring data, and communicate findings and recommendations to project designers, owners and other stakeholders.
  • Provide timely technical recommendations to contractors, clients, and project teams to address field conditions and construction challenges.
  • Prepare daily field reports, technical memoranda, and construction documentation.
  • Support design modifications and updates to rock reinforcement, stabilization systems, and tunnel support measures as project needs arise.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver innovative engineering solutions for public and private infrastructure projects.
  • Promptly communicate observations, recommendations, and emerging geotechnical concerns to project stakeholders.
  • Follow Shannon & Wilson’s Quality Assurance policy.
  • Follow and promote Shannon and Wilson’s Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree or above in Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Geotechnical/Tunnel Engineer demonstrating experience in constructing and overseeing underground excavations.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License in the state office is located or willingness and ability to obtain such PE license within 3 months of hire date. Experience with Rocscience limit-equilibrium and numerical modeling tools (Rocscience and Itasca) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with tunnel liner design and assessment, including shotcrete and cast-in-place concrete liners.
  • Knowledge of tunnel monitoring programs and instrumentation used to evaluate tunnel performance and ground behavior.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • This position requires approximately 50% travel away from home, including travel by vehicle to the project site located outside the Seattle metropolitan area.
  • A valid driver license and insurable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel (required); MS Access (desirable).
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying 30+ pounds.
  • Working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain.
