General Statement of Job:
This position performs difficult technical work essential to the safety and efficiency of the City’s traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network. This role involves inspecting traffic signals, traffic signal systems, fiber optic networks, and advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) and ITS devices. Working under regular supervision, this position helps maintain and optimize traffic flow, supporting safe and reliable transportation for the community. 
  • Plans, organizes, and inspects construction projects specifically related to traffic signals, traffic signal systems, fiber optic network, ATMS and ITS technologies for compliance with City standards, legal requirements, plans, specifications, etc.

  • Coordinates with Traffic Signal contractors to ensures that plans have been reviewed by appropriate agencies and permits are obtained.

  • Reviews and approves shop drawings and submittals, sees that materials meet shop drawing specifications.

  • Acts as liaison with City officials, employees, other City departments, and engineering firms, developers for projects specifically related to traffic signals, traffic signal systems, fiber optic network, ATMS and ITS technologies, ensure thorough inspection is made.

  • Marks up proposed plans for underground facilities coordination and acts as the Utility Contact Person for the City of Boca Raton Traffic Signal System and Fiber Optic Network.

  • Coordinate and inspect field working conditions to ensure that all contractors performing any traffic signal and ITS work follow associated safety procedures and best practices, Support traffic management center and traffic signal technicians during emergency and special traffic signal and ITS installations

  • Reviews signalization and fiber installations, drill shaft, and mast-arm foundations to ensure improvements comply with plans and specifications.

  • Performs inspections for traffic signals, traffic signal systems, fiber optic network, ATMS and ITS technologies.

  • Reviews FDOT, County and City and other private, construction plans and specifications for conformance to established City of Boca Raton Signal System Standards

  • Performs inspections for related task such as Mast Arm and Street Light Painting

  • Serves as backup for City signal technicians that are on-call for large jobs requiring several personnel.

  • Assist in emergency work related to traffic signals and signal systems Acts as a secondary signal systems operator for special events

  • Review and approve final quantities and PayApps in accordance with the City Procurement Standards 

Knowledge of:

  • Safety related precautions, equipment and best practices in construction projects related to traffic signals.

  • Principles and practices of traffic signal systems and equipment as related to the inspection of construction projects for compliance with standards, plans, and specifications.

  • Modern methods and techniques as applied to the signalized intersection construction, systems integration, microelectronics and network design.

Skilled in:

  • Field inspection of traffic signal and ITS installation in accordance with the applicable City and State standards, policies and procedures

  • Verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with vendors and contractors

  • Preparation of daily inspection reports and checklists 

  • Review and approval of shop drawings related to traffic signal and ITS hardware equipment

Ability to:

  • Communicate with other personnel in proper work methods related to signal systems;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees, contractors, and the general public.

  • Express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to prepare technical reports.

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in Electronics, Computer Systems

  • Three (3) years of experience Signal Construction and maintenance, Systems Integration, ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management Systems) and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems). 

  • Possession of IMSA Traffic Signal Inspector Certification within 6 months from the date of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • IMSA Traffic Signal II and IMSA Electronics in Traffic

Additional experience is accepted as a minimum requirement in lieu of the postsecondary degree on the following basis: additional four (4) years in lieu of the bachelor’s degree, and additional two (2) years in lieu of an associate degree.
