Overview

We are looking for an AML Risk Analyst II to join our growing and dynamic Risk Management team. This role is responsible for analyzing transaction and operational data to identify suspicious activity, emerging AML risk trends, and potential control gaps. The analyst will support monitoring, investigations, and root cause analysis across Blackhawk’s products and channels, while partnering closely with internal stakeholders and external partners.

This position requires strong analytical ability, sound judgment, and the ability to turn complex data into a clear story in both chat and formal written communication. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can work effectively in a fast-paced, results-driven environment and use data to drive timely, practical conclusions.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze transaction, customer, merchant, and operational data using SQL and other analytical tools to identify suspicious activity, unusual behaviors, emerging AML trends, and potential control gaps.
  • Perform transaction monitoring and investigative analysis to identify root causes, assess potential AML risk exposure, and detect money laundering typologies, including structuring, placement, layering, and integration.
  • Review alerts, cases, and account or merchant activity to support AML risk detection, investigations, and escalation.
  • Document findings clearly and concisely, including investigative summaries, root cause analysis, and business recommendations.
  • Communicate complex issues in a simple, effective way through chat, email, and formal written reports.
  • Partner with internal teams and external stakeholders to support risk reviews, investigations, and follow-up actions.
  • Respond to risk-related inquiries from customers, partners, and other business stakeholders as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures related to data security, confidentiality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and enhance reporting, SQL queries, and monitoring processes to improve AML risk identification, trend analysis, and operational efficiency at scale.
  • Identify and document financial crime trends and typologies and recommend enhancements to monitoring rules, controls, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Remain current on AML industry standards, regulatory expectations, emerging financial crime typologies, and process improvement opportunities.

Qualifications

We seek candidates who not only demonstrate curiosity and adaptability in emerging technologies but have also successfully implemented and utilized AI tools to enhance their work, improve processes, or deliver measurable results.  Our teams embrace continuous learning and the thoughtful integration of AI to create meaningful impact – for our employees and the future of work.

  • 2+ years of SQL experience with proficiency in writing analytical queries using joins, aggregations (GROUP BY), conditional logic (CASE), subqueries, and Common Table Expressions (CTEs) to query, analyze, and interpret large datasets.
  • 1–2 years of data analysis experience required.
  • 2+ years of AML, fraud risk, transaction monitoring, financial crime investigations, or related experience, including identifying suspicious activity and money laundering typologies such as structuring, placement, layering, and integration.
  • Strong Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, and formulas.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate analytical findings, investigative conclusions, and business recommendations through chat, email, and formal written reports.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform root cause analysis, identify emerging risk patterns, and make sound decisions in ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications relevant to the role.
  • Experience with Power BI, MicroStrategy, or other business intelligence and data visualization tools is a plus.
  • Banking, payments, fintech, or other regulated financial services experience is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of AML regulations, fraud prevention, financial crime risk management, and industry best practices, including experience investigating suspicious activity and supporting regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, a strong risk mindset, integrity, and a customer-focused approach.
