JOB TITLE: Overnight Concierge / Security

DEPARTMENT: Administration
REPORTS TO: Office Manager


JOB SUMMARY:

The Overnight Concierge/Security is responsible for keeping the building safe, secure, and clean during overnight hours.

You are the main staff member on site at night. Your role includes security checks, helping residents in emergencies, basic concierge duties, and light housekeeping. You must stay alert, act quickly in emergencies, and support residents with care and respect.


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Security & Safety

  • Monitor security cameras regularly during the shift
  • Complete a full security check at the start of shift (doors, entrances, parkade)
  • Do regular building patrols throughout the night
  • Make sure all doors are closed and locked
  • Watch for suspicious activity and safety risks
  • Call 911 for emergencies or serious concerns
  • Write incident reports for all security issues or unusual events

2. Resident Support & Emergencies

  • Respond to all resident pendant calls immediately
  • Be the first responder for all overnight emergencies
  • Provide basic first aid within your training
  • Call 911 for medical emergencies
  • Stay with the resident until help arrives (if safe to do so)
  • Inform the manager or on-call staff after any incident
  • Record clear notes about what happened

3. Concierge Duties

  • Answer phone calls in a polite and professional way
  • Assist anyone who comes to the front desk overnight
  • Check email and Communication Binder at the start of shift
  • Keep the security phone charged and ready
  • Send a shift summary email to managers before the end of your shift

4. Cleaning Duties (Light Housekeeping)

Evening / Night Tasks:

  • Clean high-touch areas (door handles, railings, counters)
  • Clean and restock common bathrooms (main floor, gym, staff areas)
  • Vacuum and mop lobby, hallways, and common spaces
  • Clean elevators, entrance doors, and glass areas
  • Remove garbage and recycling from common areas and garbage rooms
  • Light dusting (library, common rooms, surfaces)
  • Clean staff room (microwave daily, fridge weekly)
  • Keep concierge desk and main floor clean and organized

Morning Tasks:

  • Open blinds (part way, not fully up)
  • Turn on lights, TVs (muted except library), and fireplaces
  • Tidy furniture, cushions, and common areas
  • Clean entrance area and vacuum mats (inside and outside)
  • Apply salt to entrances/walkways if needed (snow/ice)

5. Breakfast Setup (Morning)

  • Turn on and prepare coffee machine
  • Set up coffee, hot water, and tea station
  • Put out milk, juice, yogurt, and condiments
  • Refill napkins, sugar, and supplies
  • Ensure breakfast area is ready by 6:00 AM
  • Refill items as needed before shift ends

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Emergencies always come first over cleaning tasks
  • Stay awake, alert, and aware at all times
  • Work independently and make safe decisions
  • Be calm, respectful, and helpful with residents
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Follow all safety, infection control, and workplace policies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • First Aid/CPR is an asset
  • Experience in security, customer service, or healthcare is an asset

SKILLS:

  • Clear English communication (speaking and writing)
  • Calm and confident in emergencies
  • Good observation and problem-solving skills
  • Reliable and able to work alone

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Walk and stand for long periods
  • Complete regular building checks (patrols)
  • Light lifting, bending, and cleaning

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Working alone overnight
  • Handling emergencies or stressful situations
  • Possible exposure to illness
  • Risk of slips or falls during patrols
